then someone must push and pull the handle back and forth, and, al
though it is not hard, it becomes anions before the family washing
completed. Then, the wringer must lie turned by hand, and this is
far more tiresome than operating' the washer.
Hand operated machines have been done away with in the factory,
in the office, and in the institution, and, in fact, everywhere. Men now
use machinery operated by power. Why should women not do likewise.

5th birthday May 22d. Dorothy re
cently lost a pet lamb by the death
channel, but now has under her care
and protection two bird nests in
which she is deeply interested. An
other thing, she is thrifty, and while
extremely fond of ice cream, says
she hates to spend her money for it.
Bert Harvey has received his dis
charge from the navy and is at this
writing on his way home overland
from New York. He is not expect
ed to reach the coast before June 1st,
making a number of stops enroute.
At a called meeting of our citizens
last Saturday night it was decided to
properly express our appreciation for
our returning soldier boys on their
arrival home and committees on
general arrangements, decoration and
entertainment were appointed. The
date is open and will be announced
later.
Your correspondent (A. H. Harvey)
has-, been named aS manager of the
Boys' Calf club, and as a result is all
puffed up. We always have admired
a nice boy, and the six members of
this club in his estimation have a
record confronting them that looks
extremely gratifying.

Raymond and Robert Murray have
returned from Portland, where they
have been employed at the Standifer
ship yards. They will work at the
Bull Run lake later on.

party and dance at their new house
on their ranch five miles east, last
Saturday night, which was well at
tended. This house is on a sightly
location and presents a fine appear
ance from the auto road.
J. A. Odoll and son, John, have a
lot of hogs and pigs at their ranch on
Sandy river near the Brightwood
school, and have been selling quite a
number to neighbors at a good price
as pork is high and apparently is
going higher.
- A- noted magazine writer in the
Saturday Evening Post in an article
on "Who Won the War," quotes quite
extensively from prominent German
officers attributing their defeat
largely io the Americans, who arriv
ed in the nick of time and surprised
them by their courage and skill. In
conclusion the writer gives the most
important factor to the intervention
of Divine Providence.
Many machines are coming out at
the week-end and although the
weather is most too cool for fishing,
some success has been achieved, al
though next nfttnth will probably see
a good many fishermen along all the
mountain streams,.
All the nations engaged in the
great war are now apparently ready
to sign the peace terms and settle
down to a reign of peace.
About 30 men went up the first of
the week to set out fir trees on Still
creek above the toll gate. Many
young trees had been destroyed by
fire two years ago and these are to
be replaced. It seems to many people
that these barren tracts will re-seed
themselves in time, but it is to be
supposed that this is an attemtDt to
assist Nature.
