OREGON CITY COURIER, OREGON CITY, OREGON THE GIRL'S DAD A Picture of the American Hodge and His Luxurious Home The girl on stilts was one of my "scholars," this is how I came to be on speaking terms with her. She was not much of a scholar and neither was I, but the word means anyone who goes to school, and therefore we are all scholars. She had an elder brother who was impudent and rebellious. I had found it necessary to apply the discipline that was fashionable in those days. Pretty soon I was told that the boy's father was going to discipline me, and shortly afterwards as I was passing his house I saw him emerge from the door spitting on his hands and swaggering towards the gate. I knew at once that someone had been stringing him, but when I met him at the gate a change had come ' over him. There was a far-away look in his eyes that suggested a stern moral purpose. "I-came-out-to talk-to-you-about-lickin'-that-boy." He blurted this out all in one breath in a harsh, metallic voice that rattled like iron falling off a truck. ! "Don't you think he deserved it?" I said. I "G-d dammim givem hell every j time he deserves it, and I'll give him more when he comes home and tells it. That's all I gotta say. Givem hell." j Then he turned back to the house. About half way there he turned again. "Say, dammiz dirty, rotten soul, givem hell andl'll back you every time." This was the parting benediction. ! I don't know what caused him to change his mind. Either it suddenly flashed on him that some one was stringing him, or else the boy had been acting mean with him and he turned this into a bluff to scare him and give him a lesson in good man ners and morals. 1 It was customary at that time and probably it is yet for a parent to call in the teacher and give his hopeful son a good substantial cursing in his presence to instill into his mind a wholesome respect for authority. On such occasions the boy would be sternly admonished to avoid bad com panions.under threats of dreadful penalties. This was not the first ex- j perience I had had of it, but I was , becoming ashamed of my backers and tired of the whole business. There was compulsory education, then as there is here. This was aj sample of it. Some time I would like to show what a perversion of truth; and of nature this compulsory educa-' tion is. It is the kind of education that fits boys for the penitentiary,, where an advanced course of the same kind of instruction is given. The Mitchell children would have, been all right if they had ever had( any decent home life. The girl was clever and good-looking. It is true her face was always smutty and her clothes were never clean and she never had enough of them. But she was joyous and happy and I think joyousness in nearer to godliness than that kind ' of cleanliness that consists in scouring children' faces till they shine like a teapot. j The younger boy was an angel-: child in his little ragged overalls hitched over one shoulder with a string. , He moved about as lightly and silently as a spirit. He had the : face of a saint and from the infinite 1 spaces where the mysteries of God are hidden, his childish eyes looked ', out in wistful wonderment upon the crazy world. I don't know what be- j came of him but those whom the Gods love die young and I suppose , they called and took him. The elder ! boy was good looking too, but he had a vicious, resentful expression such as dogs acquire in the course of time when they are cursed too much and fed too little. I Mitchell was a "hired man" or j farm laborer, and there is no lan guage that can adequately describe what that means. It is to be the slave of a slave. It overwhelms me with shame not to think how little I knew at that time. I had learned in the school books that slavery was abolished long ago. My head was stuffed with grammar and fractions ) and junk of that kind. I thought it was offense against the dignity of the dignity of the educational de partment for children to come to school without books. I did not know that such people were still in slavery, ' and that slavery was never abolish ed at all. The Mitchell family HOME stood in a ploughed field about thirty yards from the road. I don't know how dirty it was inside as I never was in it but I know there was nothing but dirt outside. The ground was ploughed up close to the walls all around. There was not a tree nor flower nor blade of grass not even a weed nor a board to walk on. It was an old rotten log house that some poor farmer had lived in until the place was sold over his head on a mortgage. The place was bought by another farmer who was well enough off to have a hired man. A few centuries ago the word vil lian meant a farm laborer. All farm laborers were villians. Some of them are yet. Every few days we read of a farm laborer murdering somebody. I don't wonder at it. If I was a farm laborer I would probably be a villain. I would want to murder somebody at least three times a day before meals or after or any old time. Huckleberry Finn, one of Mark Twain's characters, used to go up in the hayloft every day all by himself and swear for half an hour to get a taste in his mouth, but that would not do Hodge any good for he swears without ceasing anyhow. It would not be any change and what Hodge wants is variety something to re lieve the monotony of his stupid and slavish routine the same routine that drives so many farmers' wives to the asylum. The transient laborer who works by the day, can stand it for a month or two, which is as long as his job lasts, but the fellow who works by the month or year has no time he can call his own. When he goes to bed at night he meets himself getting up in the morning. Mitchell's wages were about $25 a month. Out of that he had to support a family, buy clothes and school books, and bring his children up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Of course he made a fail ure of it,, but let any of you slick hypocrites who live off of the earn ings of such people, put yourselves in his place and see what a success you can make of it: I want to tell you that in the very near future you will have to get off your stilts and out of your pulpits and cushioned seats and face this man and show cause why you are not infinitely more guilty than he iis. What is it that has shaped him to the thing he is but your laws and your preachings and hypocrisies? How are you going to stand in judgment before him? How answer his brute question in that day when whirlwinds of rebellion shake the world? How will it be with king doms and with kings when this dumb terror shall reply to God after the silence of the centuries? Don't let this girl in the stilts get ?5 1H Helping Nature to Keep You Well PpjPT is man's ri&ht to be well and happy. The membership was fairly represented and many vis itors were in attendance notwith standing bad weather. After de votional exercises and a short busi ness session the time was given to Mrs. Roland of Portland, who filled the place of State Sapi; Mrs. Kemp, who is in Salem attending legislature in the interests of the W. C. T. U. Mrs. Roland is an earnest, prac tical speaker and we feel that she brought help and- inspiration to our union. She threw out many suggestions which would be well for us to heed. She emphasized the need of holding mothers' meetings, and doing legis lative work, urging upon our mem bers careful attention to the proceed ings of our legislative bodies, and spoke of the importance of scientific temperance instruction and the study of narcotics in our schools. She made a strong appeal to the members to write personal letters to be sent to legislature, asking for votes for women jurymen, and also gave us some good suggestions on the subject of the state industrial school for girls, which should meet with universal approval. The address was so full of good and helpful suggestions and plans for work that we would be glad to give it in detail, but lack of space forbids. At its close Mrs. Andrews, our county superintendent, gave a short talk' on the importance of gaining new members. Refreshments were served and the meeting adjourned to meet in two weeks at the school building for our mother's meeting. A good program will be presented, and a full attendance . is desired. Editor Courier: At the present time two "Mission aries" of the Latter Day Saint or ganization are working in Oregon City and vicinity. Of course I be lieve it is the right of every man to believe anything he desires religious ly. That is a right that must be earnestly defended. But the Latter Day Saints do not present the feat ures of their doctrines that most people would like to know, and no man should be led into any belief blindlv without knowledge what he is accepting. I want also to distinguish clearly between the moral ana gooa living "Reorganized Church of Lat ter Day Saints," and the "Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints," or polygamous Mormons. The for mer indignantly and truthfully repu diate the other. Have you seen the Mormon articles of Faith? I shall present some of them, together with the Latter Day Saint explanation of tne same. Article I "We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and His son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost." Latter Day Saint Explanation- Catechism, page 13 "Are there more Gods than one? Yes, many." The Mormon sacred books include the Book of Mormon, the Book of Doc trines and Covenants, the Pearl of Price, all of which they placa above the Scripture as later revelation. The Catechism and the Compendium ot Theology, and Joseph Smith's dis courses are also authoritative doc trinal works. How do these explain the above article of faith? "God Himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted man? Jo. of D., p. 4. "He (Adam) is our father and our God, and the only God with whom we have to do." Brigam Young J. of D. Ip. 50. The Pearl of Price tells how the head God called a con clave of the Gods, and one cf them was sent down to earth to become the progenitor of the human race. "When our Father Adam came into the gar den of Eden he came into with a ce lestial body, and brought Eve, one of his wives, with him." B. Y., J. of D. 1-50. There is no other God in heaven but that God who has flesh and bones." Comp. 287. "And you have got to learn to be Gods yourselves, the same as all Gods have done before you." Comp. 283. "Each God through his wife, or wives, raises up a numerous family of sons and daughters for each father and mother will be in a con dition to multiply for ever and ever. Seer I, 37. In other words, God is a sensual polygamist; our God being no other than tVdam, who begets all souls in the other world .from one of his nu merous wiyes before they can be born in flesh upon earth. And this pro geny, in turn, can learn to become Gods by adopting the "New and Ever lasting" Covenant of Joseph Smith, the covenant of polygamy. The only path to Godhead is the path by poly gamy. The Mormon who does not dare to openly take a plural wife in this cold and unfriendly world because of the opposition of the United States gov ernment to such procedure can es cape, and yet win Godship with a world to populate with his own celestial-born progeny by "sealing" to himself, with the mystic rites of the cult, any woman not already claimed bv a "Saint," whom he so desires. One hoary old apostle has sealed Francis A. Willard to himself in this way,' and expects that she will be his in eternity. Any "Gentile's" wife is fair prey. The "Gentile" will have no part in the heavenly blessings. and so the Mormon can "save" her by calling her up at the last day. "Jesus Christ and the Father are two persons, in the same sense that John and Peter are two persons- possessing every organ, limb, and material part that man possesses." Key 42. Speaking of electricity, etc, "The purest and most refined of these substances is that substance caled the Holy Spirit." Let us look at the Scripture for a moment by way of contrast. Isaiah 42: 10-11. "Before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. I, even I, am Jehovah, and besides me there is no saviour." Isa. 45: 5-7. "I am Jehovah, and there is none else; besides me there is no God. I will gird thee, though thou hast not known me; that they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the West that there is none beside me; I am Jehovah and there is none else. I form the light and create darkness; I make peace and create evil; I am Jehovah and do eth all those things." Isa. 45:21, "Who hath declared it of old? have not I, Jehovah ? and there is no God else beside me, a just God and a Sa viour; there is none beside me." "God is a SPIRIT, and they that worship him must worship in spirit and in truth." John 4:25. For the "Celes tial marriage" idea see Luke 20:35, "The sons of this world marry and are given in marriage, but they that are accounted worthy to attain to that world and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage." See also Jonh's gospel for the doctrine of the Holy Spirit; "I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may, be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth; whom the world can not receive; for it beholdeth Him not, neither knoweth Him." vs. 26. "He shall teach you all thines, and bring to your remembrance all that I said unto you." The very heart of the "Latter Day Saint" faith is the "New and Ever lasting Covenant." This is the heart of the entire Mormon faith, but it would not be pood policy to present it at first to the public, or to pro spective converts. It is omitted from many editions of the Book of . Doc trines and Covenants, notably those that are for general sale or distribu tion, but it is in the complete edition, kept for the Saint's own use. A copy with it in it fell into my hands several years ago, so I am making accurate quotations: "For behold I reveal unto you a NEW and EVERLASTING COVE NANT; and if ye sbide not in that covenant, then are ye DAMNED." The above explains why the United States Government cannot stamp out polygamy in Utah. When the writer visited Salt Lake City about six years ago, friends there showed him home after home where, to their knowledge polygamous marriages had been formed recently. But listen: "And again, verily I say unto you, if a man marry a wife by the new and everlasting Covenant, and it is sealed unto them it shall be done unto all things whatsoever my servant hath put upon them, in time and through all eternity, and shall be in full force when they are out of the world. Then (if they obey this covenant by polygamy) shall they be Gods, because they have all power, and the angels are sub ject unto them." "And again as pertaining to the law of the priesthood; if a man es pouse a virgin, and desire to espouse another if he have ten virgins given unto him by this law, he can not commit adultery, for they belong to him, and they are given unto him, therefore he is justified." This fs the "Covenant" obedience to which makes man a "God," and disobedience to which is punished by damnation. The Compendium says, p. 125 "If plural marriage be unlawful, then is the whole plan of salvation through the house of Israel a failure, and the entire fabric of Christianity with out foundation. "THIS IS THE SOUL OF MORMONISM, and MORMON ISM, ACCORDING TO ITS OWN STATEMENT, CAN NO MORE EX IST WITHOUT ACTUAL OR SPIR ITUAL POLYGAMY THAN THE BODY CAN EXIST WITHOUT A SOUL. I am not criticising; I am only stating facts. ' As I ran into Salt Lake City a few years ago over the San Pedro and Salt Lake Line a Mormon elder boarded the car at Tooele Station. His breath smelt like a saloon, and he was three seas over, as the sailors say. He said, "Gee, I had a great time last night!" "Yes," said I, "what were you doing?" "I was down at the hop at Tooele. Lots of beer; lots of pretty girls. Dandy time." He was one of the younger (shining lights of the heirirchy in Salt Lake City, having a little fore taste of the Mormon heaven at Tooele. HOW ARE MEN SAVED AC CORDING TO THE MORMON CREED? Brigham Young, J. of D. 1-50, says of Christ "He was not begot ten by the Holy Ghost." Apostle Hyde says: "Christ was married to the two Marys and to Martha." The Compend says (8, 9) the atonement in Christ, and faith in it will save no man. Men are saved by at. life of good works. Caechism 40 "No one can be saved without bap tism." "All will be damned who are not Latter Day Saints." J. of D. I, 39. "The Holy Ghost comes only by laying on hands of the priest hood." (Mormon Doctrines, 16-17. "Justification by faith is evil and only evil." (Talmage on Art of Faith, 120). Baptism, good works, and obedience to the priesthood is the Later Day Saint plan of Salva tion, according to their own doctrin al standards." In a further communication I shall deal with th'e Book of Mormon, from the historical standpoint, and possibly with some other Mormon doctrines. Let me close this letter with extended quotations from the New and Everlasting Covenant (Sec tion 32). "4. For behold! I reveal unto you a new and everlasting covenant; and if ye abide not in that covenant, then are ye damned; for no one can reject this covenant and be permitted to enter my glory. (Now see, you prspoective Latter Day Saint converts, what you have to accept, or be damned). "6. And as pertaining to the new and everlasting covenant, it was in stituted for the fulness of my glory, (God is supposed to be talking), and he that receiveth a fullnesa thereof must and shall abide in the law, or he shall be damned, saith the Lord God. "15. Therefore if a man marry him a wife in the world, and he mar ry her not by me, nor by my word; and he covenant with her so long as he is in the world, and she with him, their covenant and marriage is not of force when they are dead, and when they are out of the world; there fore they are not bound by any law when they are out of the world." "16. Therefore when they are out of the world they neither marry nor aie given in marriage; but are appointed angels in heaven, which angels are ministering servants, to minister to those who are of a far more, and an exceeding, and an eternal weight of glory. "17. For those angels did not abide in my law, therefore they can not be enlarged, but Temain SEPA RATELY and SINGLY without exal EIJJ0Y WINTER Prat. And, again, verly I say unto you, if a man marry a wife by my word, Which is my law, and by the new and everlasting covenant, and it is sealed unto them by the spirit of promise, by HIM WHO IS ANNOINTED (the Mormon priest), unto whom I have appointed this power, and the keys of this priest hood they shall pass by the angels, and the Gods which are set there, to their exaltation and glory in all things, as hath been sealed upon their heads, which glory shall be ful filled, AND A CONTINUATION OF THE SEEDS FOREVER AND EVER (eternal fecundity). And he that abideth not this law can in no wise enter in to my glory, but shall be damned, saith the Lord." Now I return to Section 26, which reads: "Verily, verily I say unto you, if a man marry a wife according to my word, and they be sealed by the Holy Spirit of Promise, according to ; my appointment (meaning the En dowment House ceremonies), and he or she SHALL COMMIT ANY SIN or transgression of the new and ever lasting covenant whatever, AND ALL MANNER OF BLASPHEMIES, and if they commit no MURDER WHEREIN THEY SHED INNO CENT BLOOD yet shall they come forth in the first resurrection, and enter into their exaltation." If a man accepts the covenant of polyg amy he may be a thief, a liar, an adulterer, and even a murderer provided he sheds no INNOCENT (Mormon) blood, and his Godhead is sure. . Now this is the essence of Mor monisrri, quoted from the Mormon's own secret texts.
