OREGON CITY COURIER, FRIDAY, AUGUST 21, 1908 BRYAN DEEPLY GRATEFUL. BEEF FOR THE SHOW RING. To produce a beef animal for show purposes it is not sufficient that the animal be given a few weeks of train ing at the end to round him into prop er condition. It is tnseullul to com mence the training of the animal at birth. For beef purposes it has been my experience that the calf from au Angus cow, sired by u while or roan Shorthorn bull, hiCa glve.i ije best sat isfaction. I aim to li:ive llm calf born some time between Den. 1 and Ibu Ins! of January. This will get (be calf Into proper condition, so that be will derive the benefits of Hie early seed in the spring. From birth until August the calf Is allowed to run with the mother. The cow Is milked twice each day, so that a supply of milk will be maintained for the calf as long as desirable. When six weeks old it is given a little lin seed oil cake and yellow turnips. About the middle of May the cow and calf are turned into the pasture, where they are left until the 1st of August. Tho calf is then takeu from the moth er and put Into a box stall, which is kept well bedded with clean, fresh straw. The calf is suckled twice each day and given plenty of green feed. In the morning I give him also a little linseed cake and in the evening a lit tle grain, consisting of equal parts of If Elected Will Not Seek Second Nomination. Fairvlew, Lincoln, Neb. William J. Bryan, when he received ths an nouncement of his nomination as Presidential candidate of the Demo cratic party, said: "The Presidency is the highest of ficial position in the world, and no one occupying it can afford to have his views upon public questions biased by personal ambition. Rec ognizing his responsibility to God, and his obligation to his countrymen, he should enter upon the discharge of his duties with singleness of pur pose. Believing that one can beit do this when he 1b not planning for a second term, I announce now, aj I have on former occasions, that, If elected, I shall not be a candidate for re-election. "This Is a nomination plainly from the people, and my obligation will be purely to the people. I appre ciate the honor more because It oame not from one person or a few per sons, but from the rank and file, act ing freely and without compulsion." WhaiTs Best lor Indigestion? Mr, A. After Sept. 1 I also feed him a few turnips. About three weekB before the open ing of the show I commence to give the calf more personnl care and train ing. Ills feed continues as before, but his exercise Is all taken at the rope's end. Each afternoon I lead him up and back a half mile lane. lie Is allowed to travel at bis own leisurely pace, but Is required to keep moving and to keep his head held up. After this he Is given a lesson In standing, turning around and starting at the snap of the whip. Through this means he soon loses all shyness and will feel at ease when led Into the show ring. Each day, usually In the morning, I sponge him off with cold water and blanket him, thus encouraging the growth of the hair. : A few days before' bo is expected to be shown I polish his horns, oil his hoofs and curl his coat of hair. To polish his horns I first go over them with the rasp, followed respectively by the emery, sandpaper and a piece of glass. This treatment is applied but the first time, and each day fol lowing I polish tho horns with R pumice stone and a little olive oil. Ills feet are trimmed and a little oil n nd lampblack occasionally applied to give them n darker appearance. To curl the hnlr the calf is first sponged off with cold water until his hair Is thoroughly wet. Now, beginning at the head nnd win king back, I comb his coat straight down. Next I turn the comb edge wise and draw a series of parallel lines the long way of the animal. This Is followed by combing lightly from the bottom upward, which leaves the FINISHING SHEEP. B To Reach Perfection They Must Properly Fed From Birth. Scientific men give to the feedei various formulae for the proper bal ancing of the rations or food given to live stock which Is termed a balanced ration, or, in other words, a certain quautlty of food the chjjuileal con stituents of which balance In correct proportion to the supposed require ment of the animal which consumes them. Like all scientific principles when used in practical work, it needs in addition to the scientific, a thorough practical knowledge In order to obtain full benefit from the Information thai science has placed In the bands of the feeder. What Is suitable for an nnl mill at one stage of Its development la not necessarily so at another. In deal ing with tho finishing of sheep, how ever, It may at once be said that, no matter how skillful the feeder may be, he can never bring sheep or lambs to a proper finish that have been in their earlier, days neglected or allowed to waste and become poor. The essence of the first class carcass or the perfectly finished sheep or lamb is that it should never lose during any portion of Us career that fine touch which only those that have been fed The "BROOKS" Cold Tire Setter Compresses the Metal COLD No burnt or charred felloe sur face to wear away but a hard wood surface instead. The hair Is neatly parted in the mid dle on the forehead and backward over tho neck to the shoulder. This Is repeated each day until the day of tho show. On tho morning that lie Is to be shown I polish his hoofs and horns and curl his hnlr. He Is not given much feed, ns this would give him a pouchy appearance. After this he Is glveu a short walk and Is then ready to be led Into the show ring. To handle nn animal In the bIiow ring requires a good denl of skill and ndeptness. A poorer animal, well shown, quite often takos n bluo rib bon over a better one poorly shown. I aim to keep the fore feet of tho ani mal on a little higher ground when possible. Tho head of the animal must at nil times bo held high nnd when standing should stand evenly on all four feet. The showing Is, of course, the climax of the whole thing. Davidson, of No. Ht7 Uifford Ave., Sau Jose, Gnl., says: "The worth of Eloctrio Bitters as a goneral family remedy, for headache, biliousness and torpor of the livur aud bowels is so pronounced that I nm prompted to say a word iu its favor, for the benefit of those seeking roliof from suoli afflictions. Thf breeder who Is toiost successful Is the feeder who brings his sheep to the greatest degree of perfection, is the man who feeds regularly with au Increasing quantity of food, In ac cordance with the consuming capa bility of the sheep, straightaway from birth, and Is the man who exhibits the most perfectly finished animal. It Is singular but true that for out ordinary market requirements it is fai more difficult to finish our sheep so as to realize the highest price than It is to finish for the show or for exhibition. I'or tho latter one cannot well get the anlnuil too fat, nor can It be overfed so long as the (Inn and good touch remains, but with tho ordinary market the demand at the present time Is fot the animal that Is deep In Its flesh, with a good handle and n moderate supply of fat. This market condition needs great care In feeding. W. It. Gilbert.
