Harms and John Harms, prosper ous farmers of the Macksburg coun try, were in Oregon City Thursday afternoon, paying their taxes. The former gentleman has a farm of 120 acres and John Harms has a farm con taining 80 acres, and are among the best in that part of Clackamas County, D. Harms preceding his brother, John, the latter being an old sailor, and are among the old settlers of Oregon. On their arrival In the early days, they came to Oregon City and helped to build the Oregon City locks. In speak ing of the building of the locks, the men say that a boat was used to bring the rock from Baker Ferry bridge, about eight miles up the Clack amas River, and It took three days to go up the Clackamas, owing to the swift current, and only one day to come down. The boat was a side wheeler, Cyrus Smith, captain, and Dyspepsia RclUvei indigestion, our itomacb, belch ing of gai, etc. to you table times daily Phone Main 271 3 C A FARM BUILDING Jolm Harms was Die cook on board. They tell many Interesting and thrill ing experiences during the early days In Oregon. The population of Oregon City was very small at that time, and tun Willamette River abounded with salmon, and it was while these men were crossing to their work in a boat one morning they were taken by sur prise when a 20-pound salmon Jumped into their boat. Both men were so overcome that before they could re cover their senses the fish had taken another leap into the river. Many fish were killed with dynamite and the waters would be covered with the fine Chinook salmon. After the construc tion of the locks the men purchased property and started into farming, where they have tolled faithfully and their hard work has been rewarded. FARM NOTES An Illinois poultry breeder has evolved a rooster with four wings. The odd pair grew out immediately in front of the regular ones and point in the opposite direction. Here we have a combination that may work to advantage. This rooster can fly either way at will. Poised, like a "snake doctor," or dragon flyr-if dan ger approaches, he may dart in the direction where safety lies. If such a breed can be enlarged and perpetu ated there will be other advantages. There will be four wings apiece to be divided at the table instead of the regulation two, and, of course, such a bird will produce more feathers. All hail the four-winged fowls. A farmer of Greene County, Indi ana, came into Linton the other day proudly driving a flock of 800 turkeys. And still they insisted that turkeys were scarce. Never leave primings of trees and tushes lying around. Burn them in the garden fire, and you will know then that all the insects upon them are destroyed. The wood ash, too, is an excellent fertilizer for every crop grown, but especially useful for toma toes and all fruits. The soil is the farmer's capital, and he can only keep that capital unim paired by adding fertility to it. As the fertility increases, his capital de creases and becomes impaired. Plants and animals are his stock in trade by having the best plants and animals. He can only beat the other fellow in the competition of trade and some thing that people want and are willing to pay a good price for, because it is a good article. The more fertile his soil, the cheaper he can produce the articles which the people want. The, air penetrates as deep as we plow. The deeper we plow the more plant food Is prepared by the action of the air and more moisture is car ried in the soil to withstand droughts. Deep fall plowing, then, is a great aid in breaking up the compounds of the soil, in preparing plant food, in stor ing moisture and in warming the soil for early planting. The man in town thinks of some day moving to a farm, while the farm er's ambition is to live in the city. Yet these men rarely exchange places. It Is simply a manifestation of unrest that doesn't do much harm. The tax upon a sow that Is suckling a litter of pigs is so great that it is poor economy to practice anything but a liberal and judicious system of feeding. A carload of steers with uniform style, size and markings will outsell a mixed lot. It is the same with hogs a carload of even, good-quartered, compact, well-arched, broad-backed, deep-bodied hogs will outsell any mixed mess of the descendants of the cross-bred scrubs. Soft coal may take the place oi cnar or,ni w niri hnes. hut it tends to clog up the intestines of the small pigs and make them sore, if tne nogs are not accustomed to soft coal, do .not fpert them ton much at a time. It is a fine thing for hogs, but it does not quite supply the place of either wood or log charcoal in tne nog yarus. A Denver paper tells about two nei&hbors up In the Divide country, Colorado, who each sold a carload of steers to the same buyer on the Den ver market. The first carload were grade Shorthorns, the get of good dams and registered bulls. They were long yearlings and netted ?30.85 per head. The other carload belonging to the neighbor living across the way vear-olds and were the prog eny of just cows and most any kind of bulls that were cneap ana nau horns. They netted $19.85 a head. The growing popularity of Oxford Down rams with Scotch flockmasters who use them for the production of early maturing cross-bred lambs, is one of the most notable features gf the past few years in sheep breeding, and the development of this northern market has had a wonderful effect in stimulating and Improving the position of the breed in its native district, says an English journal. Figures recently obtained show that the unsold supply of hops in the North Yakima district is 2530 bales of 1907 and 2409 bales of old in the hands of growers. About 5000 bales of all kinds are In Western Washington. No Use to Die. "I have found that there is no use to die of lung trouble as long as you can get Dr. King's New Discovery," says Mrs. J. P. Laird Carnegie and brother Rocke feller advise the people to save their money. But the trouble is that it is a mighty hard job to get enough to save. A Lazy liver May be only a tired liver, or a starred liver. It would be a stupid as wall as savage thing to beat a weary or starved man because he lagged in his work. So In treating the lagging, torpid liver It If a great mistake to lash it with strong drastic drugs. A torpid liver Is but an Indication of an ill-nourished, enfeebled body whose organs are weary with over work. Start with the stomach and allied organs of digestion and nutrition. Put them in working order and see how quickly your liver will become active. Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery has made many marvelous cures of "liver trouble" by Its wonderful control of the organs of digestion and nutrition. It re stores the normal activity of the stomach, Increases the secretions of the blood-making glands, cleanses the system from poi sonous accumulations, and so relieves the liver of the burdens Imposed upon It by the defection of other organs. Get Results When You Spray So many people think of this spray ing business a good deal as we used to think of our studies at school. If we could slide through any old way, with out working, we were beating the teacher just that much. And, in a meas ure, this is true with many people about spraying. They spray because they must be cause the fruit Inspector might raise a row if they didn't. But, after all, If the right material Is used, it is not an expense; on. the contrary, every one nearly who has carefully watched the results, find In the end they have saved money by the large Increase in fruit as a result of proper spraying. But to get the right material, that's the rub. Probably no concern today makes such a fine calcium sulphide solution as the Rex Co. Their spray Is endorsed by the U. S. Givernment, and our own State entomologist says In a letter to the Rex people that their spray "gave better results than the home-made lime-sulphur or the lime-sulphur and salt spray Oregon formula with which it was compared." We have Rex booklets giving the experience of fruitgrowers all over the Coast, and anyone interested may have one for the asking. For those customers who want Rex spray, we have It in bulk, any quanti ty, at 40c per gallon. We also have Portland spray at 30c per gallon, and if you MUST make your own, let us sell you the sulphur, lime and blue stone.
