SUNSHINE IS THEIR MOTTO WILL LAST FOR 14 YEARS Yet They Predict a Dreadful War With Japan. Members May Have Anything They Desire Society Says It Is In Advance Of Spiritualism. Sunshine In word and doed, sun shins In the present and sunshine In the future Is the motto of a freak society that has Invaded Oregon City, and already litis a membership of 20, according to the men who are pro moting tlio organization. One, Dr. Dickey, of Portland, Is Raid to bo head and front of the society and a Port land grocer Is hustling candidates, who as fast as they signify their wil lingness to join, are numbered. Their work has been done quietly and ef fectively, but Home publicity has been given to the "Sunshine" brokers through their error In approaching one of the best known women In the city, who tried to find otrt what they were and what they were trying to accomplish. "Sunshine Society," said the lanky spieler, "la calculated and intended to give you anything you want. If you want wealth, It is yours, and If It is health you desire, It is yours for the mere asking. Certain formalities, however, must be gone through. r)r instance, if you are number seven and you desire to possess wealth, all yon have to do is to make known your wishes at a gathering. The members assemble In a circle and join hands and they repeat together: Number seven wants wealth. Then we all re cite the petition to the Spirt, which takes possesion of the idea and you at once are blessed with the attain ment of your desire." "Our spirits also know what is com ing In the future. Before long we are to have a great war with Japau. It will be by far the gratest war the civ ilized world has ever known, and the Pacific coast will be devasted, and hardly a tree will bo left standing. Millions of Chinese will enlist under the banner of the Mikado and England will come to our aid. In Illinois there will be monster battles and a lake of blood will be formed, and people will ride in boats on this lake. The war will last 14 years and for 13 years the flag of the United States will go down and down and millions will be slain. Finally, however, this country will emerge triumphant from the terrible BtrusSle but not until all of the coun tries of the world except three are swept out of existence. America and England are two of these, but the third has not been made clear." . The demonstrator did not reconcile his belief of sunshine to war. He said that the society was not formed for practices In Spiritualism but was far in advance of the Spiritualists of to day. He admitted that the members of the circle might hold private se ances after the meetings. The Inner working of the Sunshine sooiety are apparently innocent enough, and their forecasts of the future will be watch ed with considerable Interest. War of Extermination Continued from page 1 Sunday-closing agitation would no longer be an issue or a matter to ar gue about." Mr. Paget added that he stood ready to assist any organized movement looking to the closing of the Clacka mas County saloons on Sunday, and would enlist the efforts of his party leaders In the Btate. E. S. J. McAllister, who until re cently was counsel for the State Anti Saloon League, and Is still an earnest worker for reform, wants to get to the bottom of the matter, and If he Is able to socure the necessary assis tance will start the war of extermina tion on the Baloon In Oregon. Lawyer Willing to Serve. "We will make Clackamas County the example, If you like," he said last night. "I ara willing and ready to draw up a brief, if we can get a re lator to sign it, and we will bring In junction proceedings to close up all the saloons, not only on Sundays, but on every other day In the week. We will strike the blow In Clackamas County, if necessary. That will settle Sunday closing for good and all. I would like to Bee the fight carried up to the Supreme Court of the United States, and let the highest tribunal In the land Interpret the Constitution with regard to the sale of Intoxicating liquor. "The matter will get to the Supreme Court sooner or later along the very lines Judge Artnwn has explained to us here, and Oregon might as well nave tne credit for taking the inltia tlve as any other state. And I vent ure the prophecy that when the Su preme Court of the United States does consider the question, It will knock out every liquor license In America. There is no right granted by the Con stitution allowing a man to sell in toxicating liquor. It Is merely a privi lege, and I ara sure It will be held un constitutional, on the ground of being destructive to tne public morals, in- imieal to society, corruptive of our citizenship and dangerous to public weal. "Something should be done to make the officials of Clackamas County do thler duty, just as they do in this county. I. will put my shoulder to tne wheel. "It Is a Shame," says Stone. "Its Is a shame," said H. W. Stone. general secretary of the local Y. M. C. A., "that such conditions should exist over in our neighboring county. The law is a state law and it applies there as strongly as it does here. 1 hardly think, however, that our citi zens here should be called upon to chastise public officials over there In this matter. They know their duty and ought to be honest and coura geous enough to enforce them without being hit over the head with a club." Finlay McKercher, another devoted Prohibitionist, says he is willing to carry the war into Clackamas County if somebody else will start the move ment. He thinks the citizens of Clack amas County should arise in their might and protest to District Attor ney Hedges, and if they can't compel that official to do his duty, Mr. Mc Kercher would like to see every citi zen of Multnomah County go over to Oregon City and join in the protest. "Let them start It over there," said McKercher, " and we will lend our moral support to the movement. It is an outrage on public decency that a little strip of country through Clack amas County should be allowed to vio late the Sunday closing law when all other porttions of It it are forced to obey." The question of compelling District Attorney Hedges to go on record to force him to show his hand as either with or against the law-and-order peo ple of Clackamas County is likely to be brought to the attention of the Municipal Association, early this week the protest to be made by thousands of people who desire to go to Clack amas Sundays for an outing or a pic nic should not be forced to endure the insults and indignities of the drunken rabble that goes out there for no other reason than to get beast ly intoxicated and raise bedlam on the streetcars on the way back to town. Portland Will Protest. "The emptying of a pack of drunken men and women Into the streets of Portland every Sunday night is the complaint which the reform move ments of Multnomah County and Port land will no doubt lodge with Mr. Hedges before the present week Is over, and an attempt will be made to have the issue settled by next Sun day. Should this fail, the Injunction weapon will he resorted to. That Is the programme which was Informally discussed by several mem bers of tho Prohibition party and Municipal Association at the Y. M. C. A. yesterday afternoon. TAKE IT IN TIME. Just as Scores of Oregon City People Have. Waiting .doesn't pay. If you neglect the aching back, Urinary troubles, diabetes, surely follOW. : . Highland, Or., July 24 We read in your Issue of July 11 that July 14 would no doubt be a day long to be remembered by the people of High land. We feel that the statement was well made. When we awoke on the morning of July 14 we found a heavy rain had visited the community, but by 9:30 A. M. the clouds began to clear away and the somewhat gloomy appearance of the morning was chang ed into one of the most pleasant days of the season. About 10 A. M., the crowd began to gather at the new church to hear the dedicatorial ad dress by Presiding -Elder B. F. Row land. By the time the services began at 11.15 many people from Clarkes, Viola, Dover and the surrounding vi cinity had filled the new building to Its capacity. The pastor invited Evangelist Mrs. Minnie Branson to play the first hymn upon the new Estey organ. Captain C. O. Branson made the opening pray er. Dr. B. F. Rowland took for his text,"And as he reasoned of righteous ness, temperance, and Judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee"." Acts 24:25. At the close of the sermon Dr. Rowland announced that $150 were needed to complete all obligations of the building commit tee and church for the year. In a short time the enthusiastic crowd re sponded with $180. After the services the ladies brought well-filled baskets and spread the contents to the delight of all present George Brown, of Maple Lane, who had charge of carpenter work Is now at work in the new M.
