The attendance wan light Monday

with the wishes of the taxpayers as

requires re-shingling and painting It

Ladies and Geut'emen: We hereby

in connection with tna business ot the
District transacted during 'the fiscal
year just ended.
It is with considerable pleasure that
we call your attention to the faot that
during the year the outstanding in

amount of 11030, leaving our present
liabilities f 13501 as aga.nst 14556.85
one year ago.
During the year we put in new
water closets at an epxunse ot 1186.28
and pMiitad theEastham sohool build
ing at an expense of $240.
Opening the schools as usual in
September last, we found thai the at
tendance was even larger than the
previous year, but we ware able to
proceed withont auy extra teaohers;
towards tha close of the year, throngn
the removal from the city of many
children, and the fact that very many
others were prevented from attend
ance by reason of measles, the average
attendance was much reduced.
At the annual meeting of the di
tirct, held for the purpose of levying
a tax for the ensuing year, the mat
ter of an advance in wages of teach
ers, which had been presented tD the
Board, was taken up and discuhsed by
the taxpayers in attendance, with the
result that a resolution was passed
rAnnmmnndino that the Board inorease
the salary schedule ot the teaohers; as berry,
contraots had been amy ana legauy
entered into between the district and
the teachers for the school year just
ended, no action was takeu by the
Board at tha time; it has been under
stood, however, that in accordance

An enterprise 'hai will mean much
to Oregon City and Clackamas county
was placed in operation Monday
morning when the Oreuon City Plan
ing Mill Company started its new
mill, which hai just bni n constructed
on the site of the old Broughton saw
mill. Work was romnieuced about
two months ago and was poshed with
amnziug rapidity. 1 he new concern
is the outgrowth of the baker mill,
which was situated between Eleventh
and Twelfth street,'- F. S. Baker op
erated this mill for several years and
then sold the mi' f o the Knppen
bender Bros., who biilt a new mill
across the street from the Baker loca
tion. Several months ago a uw oom
pany was formed, and a number of
leading business men of the city lock
sto k. John A. Moehnke, W. A.
Huntley, Join. Adams and others are
interested in the " uv concern along
with the Euppenl 'em, and negotia
tions were entere .'to to build a plan
ing mill, sawmill and dry kiln at Wil
lamette, where inducements were
offered in the wav of ground, light
and power. A deal had almost been
consummated, when the company de
cided to secure the niorefadvautageous
site of the old Broughton sawmill.
Contracts were made with six saw
mills in the county for their entire
product and work was couimenoed
vigorously. ,
The plauing mill and nry Klin are
of the latest improved design, and the
mill has a oapaoiry of about 10 000
per month. The enterprise will pro
vide employment tor nnt less tlmn 150
men, as in addition to the force of
between 40 and 50 men in this city,
the sawmills in the county will fur
nish labor for 120 men, mill men, log
gers and teamsters. The surplus pro
dnot that ih supplied by the sawmills
will be sold in the rough. The plan
ing mill is equipped with steam, and
develops 125 horse power.

Degenerate Sentenced to Stale's Prison
By Judge McBride.
Fifty years in the stato peinteutiary
is the fate of Ira Hughes, who was
convicted Thursday of tho crime of
inoest. The second tria'. resulted in
speedy conviction of the accused, af
ter a disagreement by the jury in the
first trial of the case.
Hughes made an address to the
oourt, asking for leniency, and stated
that his wife and daughters had
formed a conspifkoy to become rid of
him, but Judge McBride said that he
could find no room for lenieuoy, tak
ing into consideration the testimony
and circumstances connected with the
oase.
Hughes is about 40 years ot age, and
is afflicted with tuberoulosls, and the
sentence means lite imprisonment for
him. The maximum penaty is life,
and the minimum ia 20 years' impris
onment. Husrhes was a resident of

Son of T. J. Thomas, of New Era, Re
ceives Serious Injuries.
The 14-year-old son of T."J. Thomas
of New Era, was seri 'usly injured in
a runaway accident in this city early
Thur day afternoon. Mr. Thomas and
his son started to drive up Main street
from the woolen mills, with a large
HinokeBtnck in the wagon, when the
horses became frightened and tore
down tho street. The father grasped
his bov, but both fell from the wagon
and the wheels ran over the lad,
breaking his leg in two places. The
team then raced madly up the Btroeo,
the wagon careening wildly from Bide
to sido, and when opposite the puflt-
offlce, David Williams rushed out,
and, aftr a frantic chase, succeeded
in getting hold of the reins aud stop
ping the infuriated animals in front
of Huntley's. The bisr smokestack
fell into the street Hnd this, only
served to frighten the horses still
rmore. No sooner were the animals
bronght to a slop, then they again
started.to run, but were stopped. The
boy was taken care of by a physician
and was suit to a Portland hospital
to receive treatment for his injuries. !
All Residents Will Be Re
quested to Dispose of
Accumulation of
Rubbish.
Mayor E. G Can field will in a few
days issue a proclamation naming a
"cleanlng-up" day for Oregon City.
The time will probably be next week,
and every effort will be made by the
oity authorities to porBuade the resi
dents and business men to remove all
rubbish and unsightlylsubstanoes from
around their premises. Oregon City
has great natural and soenic beauty
that has boon marred by carelessness
and the absence of a place to dispose
of the constant accumulation of rub
bish, but the council recently rented
an old gravel-pit on the Albright pas
ture for a garbgae dump, and now
there is no excuse for dirty yards aud
back alleys.
The oounoil Tuesday night author
ized the foreclosure of all loins
against property for coi strnotion of
sidewalks, sowers, streets, eto , and
the matter will be pushed with vigor
under the provisions of the charter,
whiuh provides for the sale of the
property. When this is doue and the
deed placed on record, there will be a
cloud against the title that can only
be removed by payment of the lein.
