When the county started in v dozen years ago and bnilt up its 'oads and bridges and got things in .'airly good running order and then roperty interests of immense value ame into the oounty, might we notj lave expected a little decrease in the .ax burden? Have you noticed any itxch decrease? Now isn't it a fact that Claokamas county, daring this time, has been lampored and largoly manipulated by i politicul machine? Don't the lieu tenants and political workers con nected with that machine get an easy living ont of it? Doesn't "Brownell sm" breed and nourish these leeohes? Micro does the ganger drunken idlers that one may see on the' stroet corner 'whooing it up' for Brownell get io much money to buy whiskey with? If you don't know, Mr. Taxpayer, -hat you pay for nil this, justcontinue .0 pay until you grow wiser. If you think that you have had.euough of this machine nnd all that goes with it you have an opportunity to "bust" the big wheel that makes it go this April 20th. If all is satisfactory to witli you, just keep the same old thing going. Taxes will keep on in preasing but when you think your fiirnr is nut worth the tax, let the oounty take it. Now the question to be decided on the 20th of April is this: Are the peo ple such dupes as Goo. 0. Brownell has sized thorn up to be? "Not on your tin-typel" On that day, or rather tho'uoxt thereafter, t here will be jtu awakening from a troubled, droara. AS TO TrHAT INDICTMENT. While The Courier, in its persistent plea for hotter politial conditions in Clackamas oounty, has assailed the public acts of the man who is largely responsible, itias Joarefully refrained from any attaok on his private ohar aoter. We believe that a propor souse ot diguity and solf-respeot requires such an attitude tiud while Mr. Brow uell's malioions and false personal at tacks on some individuals, and partic ularly his attempt to malign aud be littlu the character of ouo af tho stock holders of Tho Oourior Publishing Company, are aggravating, we believe chat tho reading publio does not care to spend its time on matters that are not of publio interest. Until Mr. Brownell voluntarily brought the question before the pub lic, this paper evouavoidod CDiuuiout on his iudictmeut and ponding trial in the federal court. But w hen he went U ture the peoplo in an attempt to deceive tho publio and to.induce it to beliovo that tho charge ngaiust him was a little niatter,,theu it became the duty of The;Oourier, to inform tho publio of tho true situation. This paper did not wish to try Mr. Brow nell's caso out, however. After Mr. Honey, .the prosecuting attorney ap pointed by President ; Roosovolt for that purpose, has presonted the gov ernments case to twelve impartial jur ors, these twelve men will pass upon the guilt or inuooence of Mr. Brow nell. But Mr. Brownell has presonted the overnment'g case, or rather such mail part of it as he could "slioot t pieces" to the Clackamas county pub lic, and has then proceeded to knock down, the "straw man" he set up for the purpose. A grand jury of twenty-four men unanimously agreed that the evidence brought before them was sufficient to oonviot Geo. 0. Brownell. Of the large number of men indicted by this grand jury, and later tried, only one esoaped ootviotion. The list of con vioted includes a United States Sena tor and a United States Congressman. Anyone knows what incontrovertible evidence is required to oonviot men ot such influence. Now the question before the people of Clackamas is .not, "Is Mr. Br of nell innocent or guilty?" The ques tion is: "Should Clackamas county's ohanoe of representation in the state senate depend on Mr. Brownell's get ting out of a nasty sorape?" The Courier hopes that Mr. Brow nell is not guilty of a nrime against his government. At the same time his attempt to deceive the people of Clackamas oounty into believing that his indictment is a light affair is repre hensible in the extreme. It is alinoBt unbelievable that a man could ask a whole community to surrender its right of representation in government for the sake of enhancing his personal welfare. Mr. Brownell's Compliments to Joseph Simon. (Followiug is Brownell's speech, made at the speoial session of the leg islature, 1808, nominating Joseph Simon for United StatesSenator. ) "It falls to my lot, and I discharge tl e duty joyfully, to nominate Joseph Simon, the Little Giant of Oregon, for the United States Senate. In char acter, in power of achievement, in subtlety and force of intellect, his merits trausoend all eulogy of mine. He owes the eminonce he has reached to no acoidunts of fortune, but to those surpassing qualities of mind and heart thht draw all men unto him; to his genius for industry aud to his fidelity to the whole people as well as to '-the great party that de lights to honor him. I present him to this assembly asvtlie incomparable candidate for the United States Sen ate; I present him in the name of a state proud of her illustrious son ; I present i him as her noblest specimen and product of Anglo-Saxon citizen ship. " Mr. Joseph Simon's Compliments to Geo. C. Brownell. (Following is an extract from Jo seph Simon's letter to the Oregoniau, published in that paper March 4, 1808. ) "At no time did I say to Senator Brownell or to anyone else that 'no name but Corbett's would be sup ported' by me or my associates. While Mr. Cor bet t may have been thought of as a possible candidate, as many others wore, no effort, so tar as I know, was made in his behalf. BUT SENATOR BROWNELL LID COME TO ME AND OFFER, FOR THE OOSIDERATION OF $3000. TO BE PAID TO HIMSELF, TO ABAN DON MR. MITCHELL. HE RE MINDED ME THAT HE WAS PRESIDENT OF THE MITCHELL JOINT CON MENTION. AND THAT MR. MITCH HILL'S SUPPORT WOULD GO TO PIECES THE MO MENT HE ABANDONED IT. I told Senator Brownell th. t such a proposi tion could not be eutortaiued. " THE PASS SYSTEM. A farmer oconpied a seat in a rail road car with a lawyer. The con ductor came; the farmer gave him his ticket, which he had purchased at his station. Tho lawyer took a card out of his pocket and showed it to the oonduotor, who glanced at it and wentrou. The lawyer saw the farmer eye his card Hskance. Brownell, who is a candidate for the nomination of state senator from that oounty. As has been the habir of Brownell, he has promised every thing, and if elected, will do as he usually does, deliver nothing. There never has been a man in state politics who has promised as much and done as little as Brownell. He gets on the popular site of everything, "stands in" with everything, and has an ex cuse for everything that he-did con trary to his 'promises. He plays the' game of politics with "marked cards" aud.is a corrnptionist of the deepest dye. Oregon lias been too long cursed by such law-makers as Brownell. In these days of accounting' it is best to kill the worm that has injected its poison into the tree of state. If Clack amas county does her duty she will spray her political trees, which will be the undoing'of George O. Brownell. (Portland Labor Press.) Strong labor organizations, such as exist in Portland, make it their busi ness to know who is the people's man and who the corporations' man. Through their official organ, in the above editorial, the labor organiza tions ask that all friends of the la borer rerfain from supporting Mr. Brownell for an office which lie uses entirely in the interest of the big monied oonoorns. The Labor Press shows its hand on the side ot "decencyand honesty. Let the labor vote hack it up. Only by such means can labor gain tin sup port of the honest element that can be depended on for fair play. Labor has not money to buy legisla tion it has votes to eleot legislators wlio are hunest and who cannot be bought by monied interests. It has votes to chastise men who prove them selves traitors to it. Romember this aud talk as you please, but vote as you feel and know. The Oregoniau Passes an Opinion. Following the Simon letter, the Oregoniau, which Brownell in the present; campaign says, in some parts ol the county, ig with him, and in other localities he says it is against liim.'commsnts 'on the subjeot in the following language. ) ' The word, ot a common liar, grafter aud doad;beat, like George 0. Brownell, is no support for any state ment. " Brownell, as the above letter shows, offered fr $3000, to be paid to himself, to sell out the Mitchell cause. He probably will deny it; but denial will be ridioulons. because everybody who knowsBrownell knows that such offer is precisely (in accord with his character ana his practices. "Of all 'grafters' that ever had to do with affairs in JOregon, George 0. Brownell ii probably the most shame less. He has everybody's money in his pocket. Persistent '. as shameless in seeking opportunity to ply his trade of prostitution, he wants to be re-elocted to the state senate, whete chances are forseeu for participation iu the election of two more United States Senators and in divers and sun dry incidoutal jobs. His associates in the Mitchell party know him as well as other know him, and would lise to exchange him, if jihey could, for a nioie trustworthy and less costly man. "But he is now becoming so well known in Clackamas that there is small chauce of his ever being elected again. Men of his Kind are a curse and a scourge to the Btato. Honest legislation tor the publio good is next to impossible, so long as such men are seut to the legislate re. Other mon as mercenary as Brownell, aB utterly devoid of all houostjprimiple and pur poso, may have been sent to the legis lature of Oregon, but we don't know of any. Tho Oregoniau is by no .ueans disposed to uso harsh terms, and contents itself, therefore, with the numerate language of siniplo truth ; which, however, it hopes will suffice to put the voters cf Clackamas who hitherto may not have known Brov nell as they ought, npou inquiry as to his charaoer. Claokamas, we trust, for its own credit, and for the comuioL good, will spare the state from further' infliction of Brownell upon the legislature." GRANGER TO GRANGER. A Prominent Grange Worker's Opinion of George C. Brownell. Jacob Vorhees, of Woodburn, author of the following letter to William Grisenthwaite, is Past Mastei of the State Grange, and was, at th time the Preoinot Assessors bill came before the legislature, a member Jnf the legislative committee appointed by the Grange to look after bills bo- fore the legislature in which the Grange might be interested. If the mass of the people want corporation tools and hirelings to proteot corporate wealth in its speoial privileges, then let's have it that way. It is needless to wash time, money and energy attempting to gain for the great mass of the peo ple something that is not wanted. Let the people go to the polls on the 20th ofApril and say by their ballots what they want. The people of Clack imas oounty know the situation if they choose slavery to corporate domina tion, it is their qwn ohoice. The press of Clackamas county lias done its duty. School Report.
