Last August he went to Leba non and there married Miss Julia Hood. Tlioy came to this city after their marriage, bought a two and one half acre tract froin Judge Meldrnm at Meldrnm Station. Hardmaa built a little house for himself and his bride, and set about to clear his laud and make a home for them. The important work of clearing land and blasting out stumps was un dertaken by Hardman. He was inex perienced in handling dynamite, and only last Sunday was warned not to handle the explobive carelessly. The unfortunate man went to his work at the lunch hour Tuesday as usual. He was blasting stumps probably 100 yards from his home and was using No. 2 dynamite, which is 60 per cent nitro glycerine. About three o'clock Mrs. Hardman, who was working in the house, heard a loud explosion, but simply imagined that he had fired off a heavier blast than usual, and made no investi nation. About half patt five o'clock Mr. Gardner's son, George, who had been plowing in a field some distance away, came up the road, when the barking of the dog stayed his prog ress, and with Joe Collins, who had jast come upon the scene, he walked toward the clearing, and came upon the prostrate body of Hardman. Tell ing the stricken wife to go back to the house and leaving her in the care of two neighbors, he came at once to Oregon City and notifled Coroner Holman, who went to the scene of the disaster and brought the body to the morgue, where the inquest was held Wednesday. The jury rendered a ver dict in accordance with the facts. " Asparagus plants for sale at Fern Ridge Farm, Gladstone, Oregon. O. E. Freytag, P. O. address, Milwaukie. ( City Council, The council passed a resolution Wed nesday placing liability for any damage that may result from the col lapse of the basin bulkhead, upon the Portland General Eleotrio Company. The company's engineer, T. W. Sul livan, stated that plans were being prepared for the construction of a floodgate or conorete bulkhead, to cost about $25,000, and the company expected Oregon City to assume a portion of the expense of construction. The remonstrance RgainBt the pro posed improvement of Fourth street, from High to Monroe street, was re ferred to the streot and publio prop erty committee. The city engineer was ordered to establish the grade on Moss and Eleventh streets betwoen blocks 9 and 10, a petition having been presened for the improvement of this street. The tournament com mittee was granted $200 to be used to aid the success of the fireman's tourn ament in this city July 3, 4, and 5, next. W. H. Bnnnev presented a netition for.a 25-year franchise for a telephone line, irnd this was teforred on streots and to the public committee property. The construction of a 4 foot sido walk on Madison streot between Twelfth and Fourteenth streets was ordered. City Attorney Franklin T. Griffith was authorized to draw up an ord inance confering power in the counoil to condemn every wooden sidewalk on Main street, between Eleventh streot and the Basin. Knapp, Chap man and Sheahan were appointed to confer with the Portland General Electrio Company, with a view of re moving incandescent street lights, and replacing them with aro lamps. It is presumed this can be done without injury to the serivce and without ma terially increasing the cost. . The committee on streets and publio property was directed to take immed iate steps for the repair of the Main street trestle at Eleventh street. An Unjust Prayer. Mnoksburg, Ore., Jan. 28. Editor Courier: In the Oregon Legislature on January 20, 1905, there was sent to heaven a special prayer by a oertain Portland clergyman in behalf of U. S. Senator John H. Mitchell. What the exact prayer was, and what 'attention it will receive from the Almighty, we do not know. In this laud of re ligious liberty we have a right to pray for whom, when, and where we please, and the subject matter of our prayers is unrestricted. But we also have" the right to criticise the one who rrays as well as the subject matter of his prayer, aspeoially if it is uttered from the rostrum of our legislative hall. In our opinion, that particular prayer ougtit to be ruled out of order. It shows favoritism ; it reveals either thoughtlessness or bad mannors Rud it exposes a feeling that meaus, "save my friend, right or wrong." How ever, since this petition lias goue beyond recall, it would be only a mattor of equal right for our legisla ture to hire some reverend friend of Hermann, Williamson and each of their accomplices respectively, and allow them to offer up a fervent prayer in their behalf. For suroly if reports are true, no man so far as we now know, is more in need of help from above than "our Biuger. " In our humble judgment this prayer' business in our legislative halls is now a farce. We are not opposed to prayer, but it certainly would show a better purpose and reveal a nob'er heart if our publio ministers, es pecially in the legislative halls of the nation, would pray that justice be done to all regardless of. person, be it friend or foe. Would it not be better to petition Almighty God to strengthen the arms of Honey, the government prosecutor, and provide him with all that is uecessarv to clear from suspicion the innocent and put behind prison bars the guilty?. Would it not be nobler to give our 'aid to those who are trying so earnestly to purify our government? Let us pray and work for righteous principles and for justioe to the end that injustioe and wrong shall eventually disappear from the earth. ROBERT GINTHER.
