The coroner's jury deol led he had lieon foully dealt with and on Sunday morning Henry Rougers and Peter Monin were arrested at Woodlmrn and brought be fore Justice Schubul who bound them over to the grand jury. Wil son, commenced a evening course in the study of law this week at Portland Mrs. Mary Randall, wifo of Wm Randall of New Era, died on Thursday She was a daughter of Georgo Reuch Hon. J. M. Bowers, aged 54 years, 7 months and 12 days, wife of W. D Bowers, died on Wednesday and funeral services were held t residence on ThurS' day afternoon, Rev.M.L. Rugg officiat ing. The surveying party of Henry Meklrum and G. W. Waggoner returned last week Wednesday. The other members of the crew were John Howland, Stonewall J. Vaughan, W. May, A. W. Kircher and G. Swale. Theodore D. Hengst and Robert Ruetekofor will speak in German at Sandy on next Wednesday at 1 p. m and at Dryland school house, miles south of Macksburg, on next Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Rev. M. L. Rugg will speak in the Baptist church Sunday night on "Edu cational Problems and the Church." This is one of the special sormons in the series which he is giving. A generel invitation is extended. T. J. Thorp addressed an audience at Shively's hall on Friday evening last on The Dangers that Menace Our Re public." Gen. Thorp is an A. P. A. and according to his view the country is now in danger of being overthrown by Catholics, an absurd idea. Opening of Shively's opera house, season 1896-97, Saturday, October 17th, 'On the Bowery," probably the most successful play in the way of sensational melo-draina of the century. . Steve Brodie is a conspicuous personage. Few plays have caused as much applause and laughter, Do not fail to attend. Hon. A. S. Bennett and Col E. Hofer discussed the silver question before a large audience at Shively's hall on Wed nesday evening. Mr. Hofer is a free silver republican and Judge Bennett a democrat and stands on the Chicago platform.- Neither speaker had that bulldozing method of the majority of the gold standard speakers and was well re ceived. The Oregon Poultry Journal says of Elmer Dixon of this place: "Mr. Elmer Dixon, whose portrait is here with presented, has been actively identified with the Oregon fancy and tne upbuilding of our poultry interest for a number of. years. He was one of the founders of the present Oregon State Poultry Association and formost among its staunch' supporter's." The contest over the will of the late Mrs. Isabella McElsander was tried in probate court on Monday and decision will be made in a few days. Heniy McElsander wants the home valued at about (600 willed to Mrs. M.W. Gardner a few hours befo e her death and claims undue influence was brought to bear on her. Shaw, once commandant of ompany F, is interested in a placer mine on Granite creek, a tributary of Coffee creek, in Douglas county. He and his associates will run a hydraulic the coming winter, and if their tailings do not bring down on them the active wrath of the two half-breeds who own the claim at the mouth of the Granite, they will be fortunate.
