WHAT IS A BARREL! rail Slant lUrrrla Demanded Pony lUr rele Are Not Wanted. Some ahippcn seem to think that a Iiarrel in a barrel reKardlww of Rizu and 'hat it makes no difference, so far uh tail ing produce in concerned, whether it is tacked in a reffular full Hi-sod barrel or d a small or "pony" barrel. Further, nir conviction in that tliexo small bar- Is are soimitinios UHed with diNhoneHt ntent, the Rcllero imugininK that a small barrel will Hell as quickly and for as much as a large one. Mm there nttv r was u ffreater mistake. The whole alo produce dealer of Now York, Bos on and Baltimore liavo recently stnit ut circular explaining why the use of hese small barrel involves them iu o, tho gist of which Rural New Vork r Hummuri.e as follows: Tho outlet for shipments to these cit es is, of course, to tho retail deulers, nuny of them out of town. These deal in uo the term barrel a u unit of Measure, and they demand full measure, f they order ten barrels of pututoe, hey want ten barrels, and to Bend tbem en of tho so called barrel which Home nipper use would bo to give them in eality ubobt nine barrels. The result i hat the demand is greatest for the large .arrols, and a demand control prico ho prico of the barrels is relatively dgher. It is estimated that on the av rage the small barrels contuiu about ; 5 per cent leg than the large one, but hey usually sell for at) to 25 per cent wlow tho price of lurgo ones. Is this irofltablo to tho shipper? Of course, vhou there is a Hcarcity of anything on he market, the buyer are less partien ar. But in case of an overupply tho orge barrels are in great demand, are old first to the best trade, and tho mall one must be sold later for what hey will bring, or, us i often the case, .re not sold ut all and are a total less. Another poiut against the small bar els is the fact that in paying freight arriago and often commission the barge is tho same on a small as on a .irge barrel. The cartman won't deduct nything for pony barrel. Tho railroad stimate tho freight ut no much per bar el regardless of size. The commission .lerchant will handle n large barrel of otatoe or other produce for tho samo rice as u small one. In fact, he would iwner handle the largo barrel, for it i eg work to sell it. Tho small barrel is I source of annoyance, dissatisfaction .ud loss all around. The standard barrel recommended by be produoo trade of New York city ucasures 17 incheg iu diameter of head, It diameter of bilge ; length of stave 7 inches; length between heads, 25 ache. This is what i kuown as tho ..undurd flour barrel. Hillride Trrre. The North Carolina station has is aed an illustrated bulletin ou hillside arroces or ditches. The object of hill ido terracing and ditching is to prevent lie soil from washing away. The objee tons to them are that their bunks be ome fringed with noxious weeds and bey are impassable to wagons and tna hinery. Attention is called to u method that riginuted with P. D. The .hinted row run diagonally across each Trace, slanting just enough to cause mining water to follow the row ruther ban to spill over from row to row, uucl hese rows conduct the water to the dge of the terrace nearest to the top of be hill. This system deepens the soil ran year to year, and Mr. Mangum' elds have constantly increased iu pro uetiveness. OIl Strawberry lleiln. Here is what, M. A. The first thing we saw was a white man sitting under tree with a loaded ride in hi hand, while up the road at some distance sat another simi larly armed. Between them worked a squad of 1 2 or 15 colored convicts. Kach wore a stri)ed suit, and had an iron hall chained to his leg. While they worked, this hall and chain were fastened around the waist. Several were driving mules and scrapers, while others worked with oick and shovel. Thev were all haid at work and evidently good natured and happy. Later we saw where they spent the night A large tent was pitched at the edge of a wood , . . n with small, jm-i fires burning near it After their supper of corn bread ami r asses, salt jsirk I Bdrolt,the001ivlutlcrawle.l into the! tent where they were chained together for the night. After an hour of singing and talking, thev fell ash-en and snored contentedly till daybreak, when thev ' ' ' P were crowded out for breakfast and another day on the road. It was said that all the roads iu Hous ton county were made by convicts. There were no jails for petty offenders; but as fust as convicted, they were sent out to the chain gang .nd put to work. At first though, the sight of that armed guard and the stories of w hippings that were told, made the whole thing eeem like a relic of a barbarous age. Yet I 1 saw enough to convince me that those convicts w ere U'ttcr off working on that roud than they would have been OOOped up in a hot jail, and subject to all the evils of idleness. I would lie glad to gee the lazy inmates of our Northern jails on our roads at work. If a drunk ard, a thief, or a wife-lieater, were made to understand that jailing means hard and constant labor on the road, such men would think a good many times, before they commit the crime that forced them into such service. As to the character of the work done by these (ieorgia convicts, there can be I no doubt of its value. I have never Seen better work done on a country roud.
