I think it’s important to know the back- ground of how the SJLP came to be and how extensive the public involvement was. Understanding the plan and the goals of St John’s residents who helped create the plan will make it clear why rede- signing that intersection will make St Johns safer and save residents money by having a developer pick up the costs. The SJLP is a planning document that was adopted by City Council in 2004 after a two year process that included Citizen and Tech- nical Advisory groups, outreach to multiple communities, and a lengthy process that was open and transparent. Among the goals of the SJLP was to foster revitalized SJ Town Center and Lombard cor- ridor commercial areas, to provide opportunities for new housing along the Lombard main street and the SJ Town Center, and to provide for a balanced multimod- al transportation system. Know- ing that intense development was likely to be coming soon, having design guidelines and planning priorities in place was of great im- portance. SJLP was the result of collaboration of City and neigh- borhood interests. Council passed the SJLP with no opposition. Recent development plans at N Lombard at Richmond have led to the offer of the City vacating its ownership of “Ivy Island” and transferring it to the developer who is building a large mixed use proj- ect. This is in exchange for the de- veloper paying for and managing the intersection improvements the City wants to see happen. This is an opportunity for the City and St John’s, and hopefully the develop- er, as it: Removes the unsafe ‘slip lane’ currently serving as the entrance to downtown St Johns and creates a safer intersection design that “Letters” Continued on Page 6 North Portland Meetings The following free listings are meetings for North Portland organizations.
