One should ask: Is the property safe
for future residents? In the rush to devel-
opment, no one seems to be asking that
important question. Also, with less clean
up required of the site, it could contin-
ue to be a source of contamination to the
Willamette River.
Though the neighborhood associa-
tion’s heart is in the right place, the need
for effective clean up should temper en-
thusiasm for intense housing at the site.
Tall buildings also may not be the best
use of the riverfront that could create a
connected greenway and help restore the
health of the lower Willamette River.

St. Johns Farmers Market to
open Saturday, May 30
St. Johns Main Street has an-
nounced the opening of the seventh
season of St. Johns Farmers Market
on Saturday, May 30 from 9am-2pm.
“We have a lot of exciting new ad-
ditions this year,” said Sydney Leon-
ard, Community Programs Manager.
“We have new vendors, expanded
space, theme days, a new coupon
each week from a local business,
and many of your favorite vendors
returning!” Opening day will fea-
ture the Roosevelt High Jazz Band at
10:30am and a baby chick demo by
Linton Seed & Feed.
The St. Johns Farmers Market
accepts SNAP (food stamps/“Ore-
gon Trail”), WIC, and Farm Direct.
“We’re thrilled to be able to offer a

Vanport Flood Commemoration Tour

On May 30, 1948 at 4:17pm a levee burst and the Columbia River fl ooded
Vanport City, once the second-largest city in Oregon. This tour features speak-
ers, visit to three sites with public art and informational signs and generally
includes sharing by Vanport residents and families.
A World War II housing project, Vanport was home to nearly 100,000 people
during its existence, hosted Vanport College (now PSU) and many innovative
educational and social programs. It housed a large African American commu-
nity as well as returning Japanese internees and World War II veterans.
Historians Dr. James Harrison of PCC’s Cascade Campus and Ted Kaye
will share their unique perspectives on the community and its relationship to
Portland. This outdoor tour begins at the Delta Park/Vanport Park & Ride and
continues by carpool. Suitable for adults and children aged 10+; RSVPs ap-
preciated.
