Roosevelt Softball team wins PIL First time in school history By Coach Kelsey Green With a 22-4 record this season and 17-1 in league, the Roosevelt Roughrider Softball team has been named PIL champs for the fi rst time in school his- tory. As an alumni, RHS school counselor and head coach of these amazing young ladies, I can whole- heartedly say that this team most certainly has made Concerned citizens fi ght for a larger STEM area at RHS Hiring an attorney, they simply want RHS’s STEM to have a suitable space carried the opening banner for this year’s Parade. SEND BRIDGE PICS - www.stjohnsreview.com - 503-283-5086 Concerned with an area of Roo- sevelt’s remodel that many local citizens think is inadequate and substandard to other schools, a lo- cal group, which has studied and met with PPS on several occa- sions to discuss and improve the plan, say their efforts have unfor- tunately fallen on deaf ears. The area of concern is RHS’s planned 3,000 sq. ft. STEM sec- tion, which is one-third the size of Franklin High School’s 9,000 sq. ft. STEM space. The group has spent a year and a half on the issue and found what they believe to be a better plan for RHS and have shared their ideas with the PPS remod- el planning group. “The plan is straightforward,” said Donna L Cohen, Master of Library and In- formation Studies. Cohen is one of the concerned North Portland citizens. “In fact, it is so intui- tive that when we suggested it to PPS in May, 2014 they took our advice. Our suggestions was to move the gym/athletics area westward by about 30 feet; that would give us the space STEM needs. But about a week later, at the last DAG [Design Advisory Group] meeting, they announced they had moved the building and added space, but it was to the auxiliary gym instead!!” Cohen said the athletics/gym space is already huge compared to STEM. “We know that Athlet- ic spaces take up a lot of room, but, the STEM space is about the size of the Athletic’s storage area. This isn’t an arrangement that is proportional to the needs and sig- nifi cance of each program.” Continued on Page 3 “STEM at RHS” Left: Pitcher of the Year, Freshman Grace Ferres. Taking on the program fi ve years ago, the growth in talent and dedi- cation of these female athletes as well as support from outstanding as- sistant coaches and incredibly devoted parents have transformed this program from the bottom of the league to the top. Senior four-year starting catcher Megan Verbout was named PIL Play- er of the year and freshman Grace Ferres, Roosevelt’s ace was named PIL Pitcher of the Year. Eight additional Lady Riders including senior Natalie Walters, senior Ruth Henry and senior Mariah Olson were hon- ored with all league recognition this season.
