DVD offi cers investigated over- dose deaths on January 9 and 13, 2015. As part of these investiga- tions, offi cers obtained informa- tion and evidence that resulted in the arrests of Pineda-Chavez and Laso-Barrajona. In Multnomah County, heroin abuse and overdose deaths continue to be a signifi cant issue for the community. Accord- ing to the Oregon State Medical Examiner, there were 59 heroin overdose deaths in Multnomah County in 2013, and an additional 45 from methamphetamine. 2014 numbers have not yet been tabu- lated. DVD is notifi ed on every drug overdose death in the City of Portland. If there are investigative leads to follow,(i.e. information on who supplied the narcotics), DVD offi cers focus efforts on identify- ing and arresting those responsible for putting the drugs in the hands of the deceased. In 2014, DVD investigated 21 overdose deaths, primarily from heroin, for potential criminal pros- ecution. In 2014, DVD seized over 82 pounds of heroin (a signifi cant jump from the 13 pounds seized in 2013), which translates to 7.4 million individual doses, any of which is potentially fatal. DVD attributes many of these heroin overdose deaths to peo- ple who fi rst became addicted to prescription pain medication then switch to heroin due to the cheaper cost. Additionally, in 2014, DVD seized 178 pounds of cocaine and 76 pounds of methamphetamine. Members of the Drugs and Vice Division created a documentary fi lm about prescription drug abuse called Generation RX - The Pill Problem, narrated by KGW’s Tra- cy Barry, to raise awareness about the reality of prescription drug abuse in Portland. Offi cers arrived in the area and contacted employees who told police that the suspect was armed with a handgun as he demanded money. After obtaining an undisclosed amount of cash, the suspect ran out the door and rode away on a bicycle East towards Airport Way. Several offi cers checked the area but did not locate anyone matching the suspect’s de- scription. The suspect is described as a white male, 25 to 45 years old, thin build, blue eyes, wearing a gray hoodie with a skull print, a skull mask, riding a bicycle.
