Newspaper Page TextVOTE FOR NEW SCHOOL HOUSES School Election Saturday, June 1 9, 1 920. WHY A TAX LEVY IS NECESSARY There has been little building of schools for the past five years. " 5 V 1 There have been no new buildings and no new rooms added to existing buildings in the past three years. The normal increase in children of school age in Portland requires sixty additional rooms each year. The district is now 166 rooms behind. The proposed levy will about cover the needs for one year but will not permit replacement of any of the temporary (portable) rooms now in use. You are asked to vote for a tax levy of $950,000, which is about a three-mill additional levy upon the assessed valuation of prop erty in School District No. 1. In other words you are asked to vote away the price of a box of cigars, a night at the opera or two or three movie shows, so that the children may be properly housed at school. If approved this tax will not become payable until Feb. 1921; it could then be used for new buildings in time for September, 1921. St. Johns needs a new high school building. It cannot be provided until more school funds are voted by the people. - WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO VOTE All registered voters may vore for candidates for school director. ONLY registered voters whose names appear on the tax rolls may vote for the tax levy. . This does not mean property owners only but all who pay taxes on Real Estate, Automobiles, Corporation Stocks, etc. WHERE TO VOTE ' Precinct 65 Central School, John and Jersey Streets. Precinct 66 James John High School, Tacoma and Filmore Streets. Precinct 67 North School, Reno and Chapel Streets. Precinct 68 East School, Seneca and Newton Streets. WHEN TO VOTE From 12 o'clock noon to 8 p. m. Saturday, June 19, 1920. (One reason that it takes so much money to run the Portland schools is because most Portland children are ambitious enough to go on to high school. In other cities about 2096 of the children finishing the grades go on to high school. In Portland 90 of them en ter high school.
