Tho Northwestern Tuberculo sis Conference will hold its first session at Portland October 15th and 10th. It is organized for tho study and prevention of tuberculosis. The Debonair club was enter tained at tho home of Mrs. A. W. Markle last Thursday after noon. Mrs. G. M. Hall, Mrs. Irvin Gromachey and Miss Par mely were guests. Joseph Crouch and family ex pect to leave next week for Long Reach, Cal., where they may make their permanent home. Thos. Kavanaugh ac companies them thither. Mrs. Lillie Rich, of Chapman, Ore., has been visiting her daughter. Miss Gebrgia Rich, of St. Johns. She says the rain has done an abundance of good in that section of the country. Miss Celia Hunkins has re turned to her school duties at Forest Grove. She will teach German in the high school there us formerly, and this year will teach pyschology as well. More interest was manifested here in ladies' registration last Saturday than the average in the city of Portland. About 20 per cent of the ladies here reg istered, it is said, while the average in the city of Portland was about fifteen per cent. St. Johns may always be found in the lead. The Sans Dieu Riens class of the Evangelical church held a business meeting at the parson age last Tuesday evening, when a good time was had. Miss Ruth Layton was elected presi dent, Miss Ruth Smith having resigned that position. Two new members were added. The class recently purchased a fine piano. J. S. McKinney reports the following sales: F. P. Drinker has purchased house and lot from Mr. Wright on North Jersey street. J. E. Conrad of Williams avenue has purchased house and lot from G. E. Ohs feldt on East Mohawk; M. Mer rick has purchased house and lot from Mrs. Mary Simmons on Edison street, coming open at 24th for Mrs. M. J. Lindley is able to be about again. New subscribers are in at a pleasing rate. A number of new residences are being projected for St. Johns. The State Fair will Salem on September one week. Lowis David, who has been on the sick list for some days, is improving. Mrs. E. A. Orr, of Woodland. Wash., is a guest at the home of Dr. H. F. Jones. W. E. Mrs. Clark, who recently dis posed of her confectionery store on South Jersey street, expects to leave for Medford baturduy. where she will probably remain for the winter. The St. Johns Phonograph Exchange is tho name of a new store to bo opened up at the corner of Jersey and Chicago streets. Frank Gasser is the proprietor. J. F. Gillmore reports the sak' of a house and lot on North Willamette boulevard, one on Jersey, one on South Syracuse and a vacant lot in Lust bt. Johns. These sales were made duing the past two weeks. Any one having a heating stove that he would desire to donate to tho East St. Johns Union Sunday School should call Mrs. R. G. Hrand, Colum bia 2G9. Such contribution would bo gratefully received. Married Ladies' day will be observed at tho Evangelical church next Sunday, the mar ried ladies having charge of all the services. A married lady will preach tho sermon. A new choir has been organized at this church. A couple of errors were made in the urticle concerning the death of Ross Parker last week. Ho was 39 years of age und survived by five brothers, in stead of four, all of whom are engaged in the ship knee Indus try at Airlle. A Red Cross instruction class is being formed in St. Johns in which elementary hygiene and home care of the sick will bo taught. The body of an unidentified man, aged about CO, was found floating in the Columbia Slough at the foot of Swift boulevard Wednesday afternoon by Patrol man Sloan, who was fishing in that vicinity. Because the body was tied to a string fastened to a pole which had been dug in the bank, it was at nrst thought that the man might have been a victim of foul play, but it was learned later that other persons had discovered the body before Sloan and had tied it to the bank to keep it from floating away.
