When a new bridge is needed,
a road must be repaired, a court
house is to be built, where docs
the money come from? Do the
mail order houses pay it?
Hardly. They will not even
send a contribution to help buy
a new boll for the new church or
or to help a Fourth of July cele
bration. They pay no taxes in
this town, and they are not con
cerned in its prosperity.
This town must bo supported
by its residents and those who
live in the immediate vicinity.
If thoy insist on sending their
money away then they are help
ing to kill their town, and thoy
are making it harder for them to
pay the taxes necessary to main
lain local government and to
make local improvements.

FIRST NATIONAL BANK, ST. JOHNS, OREGON
The thin blooded critics in
thu East who are constantly find
ing fault with the climate of
Oregon, which they have never
experienced should have been
here Sunday in a body. A
nearer perfect day could not be
imagined. The warm, life giving
sunshine of our glorious golden
Indian summer fell in an aurifer
ous deluge on the broad bosom
of the earth, and lent its lumin
ous light with entrancing ell'ect
to grouped masses of rich and
variegated foliage. Everything
was mellow, from the heart of
man who felt the intoxication of
the day. to the elfect of the broad
lnndscapo softened and yet in
tensified in its wonderful beauty
by the scarcely perceptible bluish
haze which liangs over the dis
tant features of the country like
a veil. The earth seemed at rest
after its labor of the summer in
producing the rich harvests, and
was languidly basking in the sun.
Nature had put on her broadest
and most beatific smile, and
overyono responded to the smile
in willing sympathy. Hut who
can doscribo our golden season,
which begins in August and lasts
frequently until the first of No
vombor. It must be felt, exper
ienced, breathed and seen to be
appreciated. Let the shivering
and woak nerved denizens of
the East spend one year in Ore
gon and then IhUcn to the praises
of tho climate which thoy now
condemn. Let them experience
the healthv winter: tho frosli
and verdant spring which takes
thu place of winter with a sud
dun luap and bound, with none
of thu slush and mud and the
cold East winds which are mak
ing New England one great
hospital of phthisics; thu warm,
dry summer with iLs long cool
evenings and fresh soporific
nights, and best of all, the in-
(luscribablu autumn, thu Indian
summer which makos mere
existence an actual pleasure,

The Best Light
At The Lowest Cost
ELECTRIC LIGHT is the most suitable for homes,
oflices, shops and other places needing light.
Electricity can be used in any quantity, large
or small, thereby furnishing any required
amount of light. Furthermore, electric lamps
can be located in anyplace, thus affording any
desired distribution or light.
No other lamps possess these qualifications, there
fore it is not surprising that electric lamps are
rapidly replacing all others in modern establishments.
