The members of the Thimble
Club were pleasantly entertained at
the home of Mrs. Kuudson last
Thursday. The next meeting of
the Club will be at the home of
Mrs. John Kcclcr, 614 Stewart
street.
The young people's societies of
the M. IS., Baptist and Christian
churches will meet at the latter
church Sunday evening at 6:30 in
union service. The object is to get
better acquainted and ciTcct a hnr
mouious association of the whole in
order that better and more effective
results may be obtained.
The Artisans arc keeping up
their reputation for popularity.
Last Tuesday evening they en
joyed a season of feasting and
games after their regular work.
Next Tuesday evening they will
have initiation. New members arc
coming in at every session. They
arc a jolty bunch.
At the annual meeting of the Col
lapsible Box Co., January totli, the
management passed into the hands
of II. R. Reynolds with C. A.
Mayo as secretary. The business
will be carried on along progressive
lines and will be pushed right to
the front. The new president and
secretary have lately become resi
dents of St. Johns.
Couch & Co. have enlarged their
ad. They have realized for some
time that advertising paid, and de
cided if a small ad was a paying
proposition, a larger one should
prove proportionately so. Their
business has been steadily increas
ing, each mouth showing a decided
increase over the previous month.
Careful business methods, fair and
courteous treatment, and choice and
fresh stock have brought this
about.
Mrs. C. V. Faulkner was the
lucky one to win the prize of a
bookcase filled with fine volumes,
which has been on exhibition at
Uonham & Currier's dry goals de
partment for the past couple of
months. Her guess of 1357 pages
was exactly correct. There were
several other correct guesses, but
they were dated later than Mrs.
Faulkner s. The contest was in
terestiug throughout ami the guesses
were legion.
Farmer's Week at the Oregon
Agricultural College will commence
Monday, February 14. The activi
ties will be conducted in institute
form and will cover all branches of
agriculture, horticulture, dairying,
and domestic science and art. Any
one who is interested in the practi
cal problems of farming, fruit grow
iug and housekeeping and the new
and improved methods which may
be used in their solution, will do
well to attend the exercises of the
Farmer's week.
Calef Bros, are now putting the
embellishments upon one of the
finest, neatest and most commo
diotis furniture stores to be found
outside the large cities. Now occu
pying the entire lower floor of the
Gee SVo building, opposite the
postoflice. with the finest line of
furniture and house fixtures ever
brought to St. Johns, they are in a
position to serve the public in the
best possible manner. An inspec
tion of their goods and prices will
readily convince any one that it
would be the heigbth of foolishness
to go to Portland to buy with the
expectation of doing better than
they can in St. Johns. This city
should be proud of the fact that
such an enterprising firm has located
here. They deserve and are get

The school board has placed a
handsome monument over the grave
of the founder of this city, James
John. It cost in the neighborhood
of $500 and is a fine one. The
oard deserves to be commended
for paying this tribute ofn-espect to
one who lias done so much for edu
cation in St. Johns. The members
of the board visited the cemetery
yesterday afternoon and inspected
the new monument. They found
it entirely satisfactory in every way.
description of thmuoimmcut will

C. B. Haywood, an employee. of
the American Type Founders' Co.,
was seriously injured Wednesday
afternoon 'while adjusting a foot
power press iu the office of The
Living Issue in the basement of the
Baptist church. Haywood right
mud was caught between the press
rollers and badly crushed, The in
jured man was removed to the
Good bamaritan Hospital and an
operation performed by Dr. Rybke.
Unless complications ensue Hay
wood will not be incapacitated for
any length of time.
Postmaster Valentine presided at
a meeting of the Tri-City league at
Portland Wednesday evening. The
organization will be stronger than
ever the coming summer and some
good ball may be looked for.
Whether St. Johns will be repre
sented or uot is still a question.
The razing of the ball grounds here
has made the situation rather bad.
We understand, however, that
Francis I. McKenna has agreed to
prepare suitable grounds just this
side of Portsmouth if St. Johns will
be represented this year. These
grounds, which lie along the car
track, should draw as large a crowd
as if they were situated in the for
mer location. Patronage would be
attracted from University Park,
Portsmouth, Portland and St. Johns.
The proposition of Mr. McKenna is
receiving serious consideration, and
the probabilities are that St. Johns
will be represented by a first class
base ball club the coining season,
Mr. McKenna has done more than
any one man to develop the penin
sula and this latest offer to provide
grounds for the St, Johns club is iu
keeping with his well established
public spiritedness,
