Be sure to come. The ladies will be "It." W. C. Adams of Hood River was in the city the first of the week, meeting old friends. He says he is doing well with his Hood River ranch. The special Evangelistic services at the United Evangelical church nrc still continuing and will be held throughout next week also. All arc invited to attend. Mrs. B. S. Hoover returned home Monday from a visit to her mother, Mrs. Sarah Smith, at Oregon City. She was accompanied by her sister, Mrs. D. P. Martin, of the same place. There will be no junior or inter mediate meeting at the Kvangelical church next Sunday afternoon be cause of the men's mass meeting to be held at the usual hour for their meetings. Sam Downey and D. C. Rogers the political cyclones and real estate manipulators have combined their energies and the dynamic force iu evidence iu their office sometimes makes the walls bulge out. There has been efforts made this week to recover the bailers of the Annie Coinings, recently sunk by collision in the fog with the Euro pa opposite Linutou but we have not learned with what success. Rev. C. Bucchlcr, German Luth eran minister will prcauh in the Congregational church Sunday at 2 p. in. All arc invited to attend the meeting, but as the preaching wilt be iu German, the Germans and those who understand the language are especially invited to be present. The many friends of Mrs. Fred W. Coffyn will be glad to know that she is recovering, but sorry that her recovery is so slow. She had hopes that she would be able to attend the installation ceremonies of the Rebeknhs but Mr. Coffyn says sue will nanny uc aiue to come iu to lodge. The new cars on the trolley line arc a line improvement over any thing' in that line the company has put on before. They arc smooth running, convenient, neat iu ap pearance and the only thing they lack of perfection is n heater for the cold and rainy days. The illustrated service at the Couuregatiouul church Sunday, January 12 at 7:30 p. in. promises to be of great interest and profit. The public is invited to attend it. Usual services in the morning. Mrs. Lyons and others will sing. G. W. Nelson, pastor. Wayne L. Mills, architect, is building him 0 neat little office right across our path on the wny home near the Jersey street stop on the car line. If we get in a hurry some dark night and bump into his office in our path and knock it out of line, we would like to plead guilty now, throw ourselves upon the mercy of the court and secure as light a penalty as possible. Mr. Kpps of the St. Johus Elec tric company returned from Cress well recently where he has been awarded the contract for installing the electric light system for that booming little city. Mr. Kpps speaks very highly of the progress ive spirit of that little berg. This firm of electricians are hustlers and are reaching out after all the trade they can get. The good thing about it is that they give first class satisfaction wherever they work. The skating rink is being put iu first class shape for dancing and skating by the enterprising mana ger. He has contracted with C. W. Cramer of Portland to smooth the surface with an electric floor surfacing machine, a contrivance which looks like a street roller on a small scale. This machine is operated by electricity and travels from one side of the room to the other with a sanded roller in con tact with the floor all the time. This cuts off the inequalities leav ing the surface as smooth and shin ing as the top of Sam Downey's think tank. The riuk will be in splendid shape for the dance Satur day night. There will be no skat iug this week. It is on Mausfield, the whisker sharp, this time and it cost him $1.50 besides no telling how many cigars before he gets over it. Mon day morning he wished to get iuto the new location where he ts soon to open up his palatial whisker loint, but could not find his keys. He chased into all the surrounding offices, accusing everyone he met with being the felonious possessor of those keys, or accessories after or before the fact. He could not eet any clue to the keys, however. At an expense of $1.50 he had the old lock taken off and two new keys fitted. About an hour after ward be put his band into the pocket of his office uniform jacket and, behold! there reposed in their innocence the offending keys, just where the ower had placed them the Saturday night before. How Dipthcria is Contracted. One often hears the expression, "My child cought n severe cold which devclocd into diphtcria," when the truth was that the cold had simply left the little one partic ularly susceptible to the wandering dipthcria germ. When Chamder latu'u Cough Remedy is given it quickly cures the cold and lessens the danger of diptheriu or any other germ disease being contracted. For sale by St. Johns Drug Store. See his locals in the bargain counter und get your peepers fixed. There is a new store building being erected near Cedar Park but we have not learned by whom. It does not indicate any very great stringency iu money matters iu St. Johns. The fact that the building permits being issued receutly are for buildings costiug $1000 and up ward indicates that there is plenty of "dough" with us anyway. We wish to call special at'cutiou to the advertisement of the Prall Mercantile Co. iu this issue. Mr. Prall has nothing but the newest of goods, and is receiving new ones constantly, and is giving our people the advantage of spot cash buying. There are no bad debts his patrons have to make good, He is working on the quick sales and small profit plan and therefore is able to sell as cheaply or even cheaper than the same goods are sold in Portlaud. We thought Mr. Prall was a married man until the other day when we asked him to bring Mrs. Prall out to a social function. Mr. Prall remarked that lie was just looking for Mrs. Prall. He had read so much about the rosy cheeked Oregon girl that he concluded to combine pleasure with business and see if he could not find Mrs. Prall out here in Oregon. Of course this was not for publica tion, but it accidentally slipped through our hands. Mass Meeting. All voters, residents of St. Johns are invited and urged to attend a mass meeting to be held Wednesday evening, January 15 in the city hall at 7:30 p. m. to discuss matters of interest to all, This is a non partisan meeting.
