VERY BEST SECURITIES Fiimncicrs Consider 0ns Stocks nnd Bonds ns Second to None for Safety nnd Profit-Very Rarely in Default. pcrity is to keep St. Johns money at home, and the ownership of these bonds nud this stock by our own people would help nmnzingly to accomplish this result. The gas company is determined to be St. Johus friend. It is to be hoped our business men nud home owners will let it b:. -------- The city fathers having granted it n franchise for the construction of n complete gas plant in this city, the St. Johns Gas, Light and Heat company will immediately organize its forces nud begin work ou the task before it. Very likely from this time on this corporation will be referred to ns "the Gas Com pany," nnd the nppellation, of course, will be quite npproprinte ns to the commodity it will produce but not ns to its methods of busi ness, for, ns n matter of fact, its management is not given to "gas sing," but to "doing things," without much ceremony. The granting of this valuable permit to build n plant to supply our people with gas, is of more significance than may appear on the surface, in our neighboring sister, the city of Portlnud, it has been demonstra ted to the satisfaction of every fam ily or other consumer of gas, that, entirely apart from its value ns nu illumluniU, it is by 35 to 50 per cent the cheapest fuel to be had, not to speak of its convenience nud cleanliness. Indeed, the entire obliteration of gas ft mil the com merce of the world would be one) of the greatest calamities that could befall it. So general is itsi consumption In nil civilized com munities, that its usefulness is as completely recognized ns that of wood or coal, ami its economy far surpasses either. Truth is, n city without gas can never be reckoned in the metropolitan class, nor un derstood by the world nt large ns more than 11 couu'ry hamlet. It is gratifying, therefore, to announce the termination of this gas fran chise discussion, uud that the gran tees will not dilly-dally but begin work without the slightest delay. COMI'ANV I'AVOKS UOMIt IMtOri.lt. That the gas company is loyal to the city in which it expects to reap the reward due to its snap and enterprise, is evidenced from the very beginning of its business career. This is shown in its dis position of its bonds, $15,000 of which are to be offered for public subscription. These bonds run for n period of 30 years, bear 6 per cent interest, anil are payable, interest nud principal, in United States gold coin. They ure issued in denominations of $100, uud with enclt $100 bond is given $100 in stock without any charge at nil. This generous offer is made, first of nil, to the jieople of St. Johns, and whatever is not taken here will, of course, be speedily snatched up elsewhere. When it is consid ered that the franchise nud plant, 1 when completed, will be worth close to $135,000, the safety of the' investment is beyond eradveiittire, ; nud when it is further considered that the stock which goes with the bonds will draw its dividends throughout all time, it would seem difficult to fancy n more enticing investment, hact is, these bonds ought, every one of them, to be owned by our own cop!c, so that the dividends uud interest paid, might be kept nt home. These dividends will aggregate thousands r 1 1 1 11 1 ...111 . ui milium uiiiiimny, uiui win k,w" as the city grows, so that it is to be hoiied that St. Johns citizens will , : ..
