Peterson is remodeling his cottage on Ivanhoe street which will be a commodious, comfortable home when he gets it fixed to suit him. Mrs. I. M. Pemberton has op ened a restaurant at 106 Tacoma street. Mrs. Pemberton for n time managed the Jersey cafe, and will be glad to welcome her old patrons at her new location. Mrs. S. II. Greene, who was called to Cattle Rock, Wash., last week by the illness of one of the members of the family there, re turned Friday night reporting everything serene in that neck of woods. Talk about rich soil in Oregon. It is that kind anywhere west of the Cascades aud some other locations, but Whitwood court has a showing that is hard to beat. II. The fire was caused by the explosion of a gasoline heater used iu the asphalt worK in the minding. A loss by fire is always the most regrettable, from the fact tliut it is wholly loss, there is no redeemable feature, no one derives any benefit from it. The world is just so much poorer. Miss Viola Pcddicord of Univer sity Park returned this week from Sherman, Morrow county this week to take up her school work here next Monday. Mr. Currier, of Bonham & Cur rier, has purchased the residence property of W. l f horndykc, and these gentlemen will chance their boarding places this week. Frank Smith aud family made an over Sunday visit to Corvallis last Sunday to take a look at their farm iu that vicinity. It is Mrs. Smith's first visit to the farm. Miss Grace Kent of Uniontowu, Kansas, arrived iu St. Johns Sat urday She is the guest of Mrs. A. C. Gcsslcr, Oswego street, and expects to spcud the winter here. The Ladies' Aid of the Evangel ical church will hold their annual bazar and Thanksgiving dinner November 27 and 28. The place for holding same will be announced later. Lyons of University Park eft Wednesday for Sherman and Morrow counties to look after the crops on his big ranches iu these counties. His mother and sister who have been visiting him for several days returned to their home u Lakcview, Cal., very much pleased with this country. A meeting of the citizens of St. Johns will be held iu the library rooms next Wednesday evening for the purpose of discussing ways aud means for further maintenance of same. A large attendance is earn estly uesired. This is a question that should appeal to all. I.et ev erybody turn out and help the good cause. M. J. Rood, sand hog at work on the caissons for the Hill road, was stricken with paralysis aud died the first of the week. He eaves a wife and two little chil dren, the mother iu delicate health. Talking with our old friend Dan iel Calkins about old times in the army aud elsewhere he incidentally gave us a sure cure for small pox. He says it never will fail if taken in time, aud when the smallpox scare is started if used regularly will ren der the individual immune against any attack of the disease. Oscar Stranahan of University Park returned from the city of Van couver, JJ. u. this week, just in time to miss the riots in that city. Mr. Stranahan does not enjoy life under the English flag and says Old Glory never looked prettier to him than when he left that wooden country where the greater part of the shade trees are big cedar stumps and snags. The only redeeming thing he saw was their fine park, where he spent two days and did not get over half of it then.
