The deputies from the sheriff's office were over in St. Johns Sunday nnd screwed the lid down tight on the slot machines. A careful can vass of the city found hut one ma chine open and it shut up like a steel trap with an admonition from the officers that if it showed up a gain there would be something do- Swift and Company who are drcduinir Columbia slouch and fill- in the low places arc true to their name. They are swift, all right. Running crews night and day, every day and Sundays. There isno doubt but these people menu business and will have a mammoth institution when once established, and St. Johns will build riuht over to the little town to be started there. Nothing like it. The more the merrier. Things arc coining right down the pike for St. Johns. The only thing to do is to get in the swim and do our part, everyone of us. Lets do it. We failed to call attention to our new advertisers in Inst week's issue and this week we have had to hold over about two columns of interest ing reading matter in order to make room for additional advertising mat ter, which assures us that by the time we have arranged to make our paper a twice-a-week we will have advertising stipjxirt that will warrant the venture if the boys keep coming. On Friday evening of last week, at the home of Rev. P. L. Young, the 75th anniversary of the birth of his mother. Mrs. Lvdia Young, was celebrated. In addition to her children there were present Dr. and Mrs. E. W. Rossitcr, Mrs. W. L. Hutlis, mid Miss Emma Harlow of Portland. Miss Harlow is a noted soloist nnd sang some fine solos during the evening. A most en joyable time was had by all present. Mrs. Young and her granddaugh ter, Miss Hazel, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Young left for Mount Vernon, Washington, the grand mother's home, on Monday. Mrs. Young has had a remark able career: She was born in Xe nia, Ohio; moved to Iowa in an early day and lived a pioneer's life there; later moved to the frontier in Ness county, Kansas; and again when the Washington country be gan developing moved to SMkane when that city consisted of but two stores. Mrs. Y011111: is the mother of eight whom was still under seven years ol age there being three sets of twins. If our immortal Teddy had been president in those early days she most certainly would have been honored with a gold medal. We wish Mrs Young could have been here to attend the pioneer meeting next week. Her story would have been an incentive to enthusiasm in the orgaui.iug of the fociety.
