How To Pepare A Deer's Head . For Mounting Br Prof. E. N. Mattery Tavlik rmlnt and Furrier 81 1 (Jrernwood Ave. BEND, OHK. To secure sn artistic mount, great care must be taken In taking care of the head. In the first place, never cut a deer's throat, the bullet that kills him will take care of the bleeding; nd If you cut the skin on the front of the throat, you greatly Injure the scalp tor mounting. To begin, start at a point between the shoulders and run the knife up the back of the neck to a point be tween the ears and about two Inches from the horns, then make a V-shup-ed xut to the horns. Go back to where you started first, (that Is between the shoulders) snd make a cut to the point of the bris ket, (just In front of the fore logs), nd back on the other side to where you started. Take off the scalp in the ordinary manner, being careful not to cut it, nd then flesh It by cutting snd scraping until every particle of rod flesh Is removed. Salt heavily, at least two pound of salt and one pound of powdered ' alum to scalp; roll up the srslp and M It lay lu the shade, covered so the flies cannot get to It, for tw.u-ty-tour hours. , After twenty-four hours spread the scalp In the shade to dry. It the files are bad, sprinkle the scalp with blut-k pepper. To prepare the head sfter the scalp Is removed, first run the knife down under ths jaws both Inside and . outside, then taking hold of the up per jaw with one hand and the an .'' dor jaw with the other, give a smart pull, when the lower jaw will slip ' -out of place and be separated from ' the beud. after which It must be scraped perfectly clean. Cut off every particle of flh, tak ing out the eyes and brain, (be latter being removed through the occipital orifice, where the spinal column so - ter the brain, after which the cavity should be filled with salt. Tie the under jaw to the head and protect the horns from being broken. 1 specialize In artistic mounting: Whole Animal, Rug", IttK, Illrds tuid Fish Game llesvd", nd Indies' and Children's Furs Take your trophy to PROF.
