PUBLIC SCHOOL NEWS NOTES Nellie Putnam was absent lust week. - ' Miss Morse was HI lust Tuesday and Miss Cullihert taught the seventh grade In , her absence, while Miss Da vis of the High School taught the fourth grade for the day. Donald Day returned to Eugene the (Irst ot Hie week, lie has been attending thn eighth grade recently. There were but five absences not ed In the entire school last week. A number of the seventh grade pu pils have a record of never missing a day for the entire year. Two small boys In the first grade disappeared' from school on Mon day after enliiiK their lunches at noon, and when found by their bro thers had traveled a long distance up the creek toward the Ochoco Dam, wading in the stream as they went. DESCHUTES BAPTIST ASSOCIATION L TO HOLD AT The Ninth Annual Conference of the Deschutes Baptist Association will be held at Redmond on May 12. 13, and 14 tbis year. A large number of Baptists will he in attendance from this city. M. with M. R. Elliott. V. C. Bhlppce, and Rev. Patterson as Judges. There were thirty contestants In the four division, and all the sel ections given by the pupils were un usually good, and showed a great am ount of talent in the pupils, making it hard to chose the best. France Foren received first place from the first division, Junior Hyde will represent the second division, Maxlno Wilson the third, and Louis Ileanis the fourth. Quite a number of visitors were present for the occasion, and there was quite a lot ot comment on the efficient way the contestant had been trained by their teachers and parents. James, de luxe "second story" man, charged with thefts from Chicago homes amount ing to r,MO,om), was killed by a police mini's bullet In his right temple. James, who had heen found loiter ing behind a building on Kenmore avenue, was taken to the Townhall police station as a suspicious charac ter. While being searched he sud denly opened fire and wounded two policemen with whom he had a mo ment before heen chatting. Fleeing from the building,- firing at every step of the way and pursued by a dozen policemen, James found temporary ref uge behind a patrol wagon. Here a thrilling revolver duel enBued, which ended when the bandit fell with a bullet through his brain. Search of a garage, which the robber had established on North Clark street revealed loot totaling, police estim ated, $100,000. A card Index system kept by the bandit showed thefts from scores of homes and listed everything from razor strops to furs and from Jewelry to automobiles. H.Young D CEDAR CLASS GIVES A FAREWELL DINNER The members of the Cedar Class c the Presbyterian Church met Moi.day evening at a farewell dinner In hon or of the teachers and high school girl members of the class who are leaving this apring for their homes, and do not expect to return in the Fall. After the dinner, the girls were cal led to order for a business meeting, and the election df officers for the ensuing year. Alma Lipman, the present President, was re-elected to that office. Effle Cuthbert received the office ot Vice-President and Peg gy Mac-Murray was elected Secretary Treasurer. Various plans were discussed (or the work to be accomplished during the year, and the motto, "Everyone Win One" was adopted for the class. The report of the secretary was read, which showed that the class had raised more than $60.00 (or the sup port ot the armenians during the last year. , ,The meeting adjourned after a very enjoyable evening. PUNS FOR STATE E Armenian Mandate Offer Surprises. Washington. Reports that the al lied supreme council has decided to offer the Armenian mandate to the United States and ask President Wil son to fix the boundaries of that newly recognized nation, were received with surprise in government circles here. Officials thought it had been made clear to the allies by hints and other wise that there was no chance of this country taking the mandate over Ar menia. ... , Allies Discover 250 German Cannon Paris. German arms and 250 can non have been discovered at Koenig berg, East Prussia, by the inter-allied commission, according to advices re ceived here. Government Rail Director Resign. Washington. Walker D. Hines, di rector general of railroads, has resign ed and his resignation has been ac cepted by President Wilson, effective May 15. Announcement of a state-wide campaign that will be conducted by the Oregon State Chamber of Com merce and the part that Crook Coun ty Is to play in the movement is out lined last Friday at a meeting of the Crook County Development League by P. E. Magruder, representing the State Chamber who visited Prineville In connection with a survey ot the state now in progress that will pre ceede the intensive organization work. The campaign, its purposes and aims, were discussed at length by Mr. Magruder with a number of leading local men Including Judge N. G. Wal lace, Dr. J. H. Rosenberg, A. W. Bat tles, Guy Lafollette, Floyd Fessler and others, all of whom are interes ted In the plans ot the State Cham ber. Dr. J. H. Rosenberg was chosen chairman of the Crook County Ex ecutive Committee which will co-operate with other cities in the state wide movement. Associated with him on the committee will be Judge Wallace. L. M. Bechtell, Guy Lafol lette and F. A. Fessler. The Oregon State Chamber ot Commerce has undertaken to play a big part In the future develop ment of the state. Funds will be raised to carry on an extensive pro gram of activities. Among these will , be an advertising campaign to set forth the opportunities to be found in Oregon and to encourage land set tlement; administration to promote irrigation: extension of railroads; . refund of reclamation fund; exten sion ot highways both for commer cial purposes and through national forests; co-operation with agricultu ral and lumbering Interests and num erous other projects, the develop ment of which will be found of Incal culable value to the state. Mr. Marrruder was assured by local leaders with whom he talked that Crook County could be relied upon to do her share with other communities of Oregon. Other representatives of the State Chamber are expected to visit Prine ville later and complete the organiza tion work for the state-wide move ment which, it is declared, will bene fit every Bection of Oregon. GERbUNHO terms Franco-British Declaration is Adopted. With Change to Permit Occupation. San Remo. The supreme council adopted the Franco-British declaration with regard to Germany after insert ing a clause declaring its readiness to take all measures, even the occupation of additional German territory, if nec essary to assure the carrying out ot the treaty of Versailles. The adoption of this clause caused some discussion. Premier Nitti of Italy opposed military measures. Premiers Mill.erand and Lloyd George, however, showed him the necessity of considering such an eventuality., For eign Minister Hymans ot Belgium and Baron Matsui, the Japanese ambassa dor to France, joined them in this point of view, which was adopted. It was announced that representa tives of the allies will meet the Ger man Chancellor Mueller at Spa, Bel glum, May 25. The council ot premiers, at the re quest ot Premier . Nitti of Italy and Foreign Minister Trumbltch of Jugo slavia, will allow the Adriatic ques tion to remain in negotiation between the Italian and Jugo-Slav governments. It was learned.
