PRINEVILLE, OREGON
Former Prineville
Man Under Arrest
Wholesale chicken thefts, cover
ing a period of six months, and
netting nearly GO0O valuable fowls,
are believed to have been ended
with the arrest Saturday of Ed
Tobin and William Coen. Coen is
said to have made a complete con
fession, says the Oregonian.
Carefully following wagon tracks
that led from one farm house to
another, Deputy Sheriff Christoffer
sen passed two days and two nights
in the farming section east of Port
land endeavoring to run down the
thieves who had been the cause of
complaints for many months
Through the wagon they used,
ChristotTorsen fastened the crimes
on Tobin and Coen.
Tobin, who is 40 vears old, dis
appeared from U'lits more than a
year ago with another man's wife
and 10-veur-old daughter. All ef
forts since then to locate him were
futile, until it was found Saturday
that he has been living at Boring.
Coen, 22 years old. lived at Ixmts.
The two had rented a wagon from
a Ints livery stable for their
nightly journeys through the farm
ing sections. It was through this
wagon that Christofferson located
tliem.
Two gunny sacks stulTed with
feathers which had been aocumu
lated during a long period of
chicken raids, were found and are
in the possession of the sheriffs
office as evidence.
Coen is said to have told the
deputy sheriffs that thev killed and
dressed all the chickens, selling
them to commission men in Port
land. The theft of 50 chickens
from L. B. Elston on the Base Line
road Tuesday night, and 42 chickens
from John Kuhlin who lives near
Lenta on Thursday night, were the
specific crimes which Christoffersen
was investigating.
