Mrs. Addie Spauldinjr spent the

J. E. Stewart returned from The

G. N. Clifton and wife and a
party of friends were motoring in
the Kedmond country Sunday.
The ladies of the Presbyterian
Aid will meet at the home of Mrs.
Shattuck, Thursday, February 25.
H. S. Cram was in Portland yes
terday with a load of cattle- The
market is ranging from 17.50 to
17.80.
Now that the stockmen's meeting
is over, let's settle down to busi

Nathan James of Laidlaw was
brought in by Sheriff Knox Tues
day and will be examined for his
sanity in a few days.
Mrs. Simons of Held was in
Prineville Friday. Mrs. Simons is
returning from Grass Valley
where she spent the winter.
Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Smith re
turned from Portland Monday
where they were called by the
death of Mrs- Smith's father.

of the Oregon legislature will close

Mace & Cofoid shipped a mixed
car of cattle and hogs to the Port
land market the first of the week.
The market in the hog division was
from 6.75 to 6.90.
A telegram received Saturday
states that little Sherman, the
adopted son of the late A. G.
Scoggin, died in Portland that
morning from acute indigestion.
A church social is to be given in

John G. Maloch is special police
officer on the night shift.
S. S. Stearns started two cars of
beef for Portland this morning.
Mrs. Snodderly returned from
Portland the first of the week.

The statement made in public
Sunday that the basket ball game
on Sunday between Lamonta and
Corvallis High School was under
the auspices of our high school
was untrue. We do not favor any
sort of athletics on Sunday and the
game was played against the wishes
of the school.
The C. C. II. S. basket ball team
will play the return games with
Corvallis High School at Corvallis
about the first of March. The boys
made $30 over expenses during the
recent games
A basket ball game will be
played in Club Hall Saturday night
with C. C. H. S. vs. Madras Ad
mission 25c.
A large number of friends were
present at the societies last week
The meetings were live ones and
full of interest. The next program
will be on February 24th.
A Home Economics Club ha:
been formed by the Domestic
Science and Art classes under the
leaiersnio of Miss Sykes.
The tryout for the Declamation
contest was held at the high
school last Friday afternoon. The
places won bylboth societies are as
follows: Alphas. Oratorical Or-
ville Yancey and Bernerd Ramsey,
Dramatic Estelle Conway and
Audrey Noble. Humorous Pearl
Russell and Caroline Thronson

The Chicopians were delightfully
entertained at the home of Mrs,
Shar last Saturday. The time was
spent in toasting marshmallows be
fore the fireplace and playing
games. As the afternoon drew to

Those entering the oratorical con

this contest will not be held until
commencement week everyone has
plenty of time for preparation, and
practice makes perfect. The try-

in Manual Training this semester

Dick Mulholland of Bear Creek
was in the city last night and to
day for a visit at Marshal Pollard's
home. Mr. Mulholland reports
that excitement is running high
over the gold discoveries in the
Bear Creek district and that num
erous claims are being located some
of which assay as high as $ 125 per
ton.

turned out of juniper wood. This

Return a Verdict of
Second Degree Murder
A verdict of second degree mur
der was returned in tho Clarence
Pettis trial at Tho Dalles in just
twenty minutes after the case went
to the jury. Pettis was convicted
for the murder of Ralph Brown,
son of Willis W. Brown, whom he
shot and killed on New Year's Day.
The killing occurred at the Brown
home on the Deschutes.

mining claim in which he is inter
ested has been leased oh a royalty
basis. The same parties take an

Deschutes below Odin Falls. There
are eight people interested in the
claim, including Tom Sharp Jr., of
