D. A. Yates of Powell Butte was
a business visitor today.
L. C. Logan of Haycreek was a
Prineville visitor Tuesday.
Assessor Foster has appointed
Floyd Rowell as his deputy.
Mrs. Charles O'Neil of Howard
is spending the week in Prineville.
I. W. Ward has returned from a
visit to Portland and Junction City.
Attorney C. S. Benson was over
from Bend Monday on legal busi
ness. The Prineville Furniture Co. has
changed hands. Ole Peterson is the
new proprietor.
Mr. and Mrs. Levering of Tumalo
were in Prineville on business the
first of the week.
Miss Vivian Brown came up from
Portland last Friday for a few days'
visit with friends.
R. 0. Hooven of the Birch Creek
Ranch at Roberts came down yes
terday on business.
Miss James of Monmouth will be
the new seventh grade teacher. She
is expected this week.
Rev. Luke Sheehan of Bend will
be in Prineville and hold services at
the Union church at 10:30 a. m.
F. M. Case, the manager of the
Wiley B. Allen, Co. of Portland visii
ed Mr. Condart the last of the week.
The ladies of the Baptist church
will have a pastry window sale on
Saturday, February 8, at R. L.

The Merry-Go-Round club was en
tertained at the home of Miss
Stella Hodges Friday evening with
a dinner party. j
The ladies of the Presbyterian ;
church will give an oyster supper
at the home of R. L. Jordan, Febru
ary 14. Everybody invited.

Mrs. M. E. Percival of Madras
attended the Sunday school conven
tion at Prineville last week. She
was entertained by her niece, Mrs.
Joe. Lister.
Judge Springer was notified Mon
day of the death of Ernest Krater,
who was committed to the asylum
from Crook county on April 16, '11. !
He died at the Eastern Oregon ,
asylum at Pendleton January 30. j
Thirty-two years ago in Portland, i
Maine, the Y. P. S. C. E. had its'
beginning. This anniversary will
be fittingly observed by a good pro-'
gram at the Presbyterian church '
next Sunday evening at 7:30. Good
music. Bring a friend with you. j

The Crook County High School is j
asked to enter a team in the third j
annual Pacific coast inter-scholastic
meet to be held on the Uni'ersity
of California oval, April 4 and 5.
Elaborate plans are now under way
for the entertainment of students.
Any high school student under the
age of 21 who is vouched for by his
high school principal is eligible for
entry. Special rates on railroads.
The special meetings at the
Methodist church closed last Sun
day evening. The following were
received into the church during the
meetings: E. P. King, Henry
Barnard, Mrs. Josie Kamstra, G. M.
Cornett, Dr. T. Fox, Miss Florence
Merrill, Miss Mamie Evans, L. A.
Dudley, Elmer Thomas, Mrs. Anna

Charley Summers
Submarine Man
Charley Summers will be home
this month. He is now attached to
the submarine division of Uncle
Sam's Navy. He is a member of
the crew U. S. S. No. 3, stationed
at San Diego. He is in the elec
trical department. While at San
Diego Charley visited the home of
Richard Graham, an old Crook coun
ty family. The old gentleman want
ed to send word to his friends here
that he had not tasted whisky in
25 years. While here he could
not taste anything without it.

Ed Joslin, who works for Mr.
Putman over ?on the McKay, was
sent out the other day to cut juni
per. Joslin, who has been in this
country about a year, tackled a
large juniper and began to saw it
down. He was not at work very
long before1' the saw beaame all
"gummed up," as he put it, and
went to the house for kerosene to
remove the pitch. It didn't help
matters very much for the more he
sawed the faster the stiekey stuff
ran out of the tree. Mr. Putman
tasted it and found it to be honey.
About fifty pounds were saved.

Prineville Cattle Got
Best Price Last Week
Tom Brennan of Paulina last week
sold 66 steers at North Portland at
a net price of over tlOO a head. He
got the highest price paid for atocli
last week in the Portland market.
The market was a little overstocked
at the time, but the buyer reports
that there is "no good reason why
prime cattle, such as come from the
Prineville country, should not com'
mand steady prices."
Crook County High
Defeats The Dalles
The basketball team made a trip
to The Dalles last week where they
met the fast team of the high school
of that place in two games. Our
team was composed of new men,
with the exception of one player,
yet under the efficient coaching
of Sam Ellis has developed into a
remarkably fast one. lhey sum
ceeded in winning both games by
the following scores 37-29. 22-19.
Thus they have maintained the rec
ord of the school, since our basket
ball team has never been defeated.
The line up : Yancey, center; Kates,
O'Neil, forwards; Mct'allister, Weig
and, guards. They all report a
royal good time.

School Supervisor
and Truant Officer
Victor Shawe a teacher in the
Prinville public school, has been ap
pointed school supervisor and truant
officer for Crook county. He com
menced his official duties the first
of the week. County Superintend
ent Myers says that he is determined
to rigidly enforre the law in refer
ence to truanU. The iienalty for
non-compliance is a fine of from $.
to 25 inflicted on the parents of
the delinquent, or Imprisonment in
the county jail for a term of from
two to ten days.
Herman Ellefson Killed
Herman F.llejson, a brother of
Ollie Ellefson of this city, and
connected with the bond depart
ment of the Continental A Com
merciul National Hunk of Chicago,
was accidentally killed aldiicago
Sunday morning, according to a
wire received by Mr. Ellefson
from his sister Kose. who is well
known here. Tho telegram does
not give particulars, which are
expected to follow later In a
letter. Deceased was about 34
years of age, and bad Won con
nected with this bank, which is
among tho largest In the United
States, for several years. He
leaves considerable property.
