Warden F. II. Curtis to the suporln

He announced that there would be no
further changes.
The move of placing Curtis at the
head of the Institution came following
a disagreement on the board as to
whether certnln vouchers should be
paid because they lacked the signa
ture of an actual superintendent, War
den Curtis holding both positions, be
ing superintendent under the title of
acting superintendent. ,
Lightning Strikes Grant Pa.
' Grants Pass. The . transformer
house of the local light and power
company was Btruclt by lightning and
the city is without eloctrlc light or
power, Three of the six main trans
formers were burned out and the build
ing and switchboards wrecked.

Great Taooma Lumber Plant Burned.
Tacoma. Mill "A" of the St Paul
k Tacoma Lumber company on the
tldo flats, built in 1838, and four lum
ber sheds containing several million
feet of lumber, wa destroyed by fire
with an estimated loss of $500,000.

RESULTS FATALLY

turned Into the kitchen of San Quen
tln penitentiary before a malignant
prisoners' "grub trlke" that was start
ed in the dining-room was quelled.
One rioter was shot dead in a door
way of the dining-room by an outside
guard on the prison wall, and one was
wounded; one Innocent prisoner was
struck by a glancing bullet; one guard
was badly cut In the back of the head
by a flying vinegar cruet and numer
ous other prisoners who had and had
not Joined In the demonstration were
bruised and battered by table tops
torn loose from their trestles, over
turned benches and heavy tin cups.
Active bedlam lasted 20 minutes.
The live steam In the kitchen and the
crack of the guard's rifle from the wall
only two shots were fired -did their
work quickly.
