Confronted with a refusal by th member of the state purchas ing board to approve certnln bills with relation to the penitentiary unless cer tified by tho superintendent as requir ed by law, Oovernor Wont appointed Warden F. II. Curtis to the suporln tendency of the state prison, and scarce had his appointment been made out before be elevated John J. Dengen, assistant warden, to the wnrdenshlp. He announced that there would be no further changes. The move of placing Curtis at the head of the Institution came following a disagreement on the board as to whether certnln vouchers should be paid because they lacked the signa ture of an actual superintendent, War den Curtis holding both positions, be ing superintendent under the title of acting superintendent. , Lightning Strikes Grant Pa. CONVICTS' STRIKE RESULTS FATALLY 8nn Quentln, Cal. Live steam was turned Into the kitchen of San Quen tln penitentiary before a malignant prisoners' "grub trlke" that was start ed in the dining-room was quelled. One rioter was shot dead in a door way of the dining-room by an outside guard on the prison wall, and one was wounded; one Innocent prisoner was struck by a glancing bullet; one guard was badly cut In the back of the head by a flying vinegar cruet and numer ous other prisoners who had and had not Joined In the demonstration were bruised and battered by table tops torn loose from their trestles, over turned benches and heavy tin cups.
