MICHEL, Proprietor, Prineville, Oregon City Dads Have Trouhlss of their Own The rrineville city council has been having a busy time trying to lisve a meeting. The August meeting was missed as most of the couneilmen were out of the city. Tuesday night was the regular time for the September meeting. Councilman Waid Cram re signed some time ago, and Council man Kosenberg ie in The Palles to assist in an important operation. Four men are required to make a quorum, and Mayor Stewart and Recorder Ureese were sure of a meeting, while Marshal Kelso and Kightwatchman Yancey were ready for their two months' salary. All appeared and were ready for business but George Storkman was found to be in the country. No meeting was held, and Wednesday morning the Prineville Cigar Factory was beseiged by the mayor and members, of the council. Councilman Storkman, who took a homestead seven or eight months ago, said that he thought that h.s homestead was worth more than the councilman's job, and that he would be afraid to attend " the council for in so doing he would weaken his case with the home stead, hence, his resignation is ready for the next meeting of the council and no meeting will be held until Councilman Rosenberg returns from The Dalles. W. Lafferty, republican can didate for congress from this die trict, spoke to a good audience at the Club Hall Saturday evening. Mr. Lafferty is a good talker, and covered the political situation thoroughly, considering the lagth of time he had to do so. lie is a man with considerable ability as an attorney, and showed consider able knowledge of the Oregon sit uation at Washington. The heavy feature of the address covered the uses of the irrigation funds in the state from which they are derived, showing that at pres ent there are no laws that will allow Oregon the use of all the funds arising from the sale of pub lic lands, but that the money may be spent in any state, in fact noth ing in the laws compelling any part of its expenditure in this state. The fault o! this condition lies at the door of the present congress man, Mr.Ellis, accordingtoMr. Laf ferty, and the latter gentleman bas perfect confidence in his own ability to right the situation. Regarding the forest reserves, the speaker said that they should be controlled by the state instead of the national government, and considerable about the forest officers being '"boys just out of Harvard." Speaking of his three opponents for the place, Mr. Lafferty did not abuse Mr. Ellis, the present incum bent but bandied the subject like a man. He said that so far as George Shepherd was concerned, you can vote for him two years from now for he is a standing can didate. Mr. Lafferty is making a more vigorous campaign than any of his opponents, and It ft for Fossil and Condon, and will go from thereto Larande and burns, lie snoke in Hood River and Moro before coming here. A Redmond dispatch says: Civil Engineer F. I. Fboenix, of this city, has returned from the new town of Metoles that he bas fin islied surveying and platting. .Metoles is located six miles south of Madras, and is ou the east side of the Oregon Trunk and Deschutes Kailroad rights-of-wav. There are '200 acres in the townsite. Metoles will be the first division point on the Oregon Trunk line, and.it is understood from good authority that the railroad people have se cured sutllcient land at that point for (hops and other purposes. A 43-stall roundhouse and immense coal bunkers will be located at this po nt and a large tide trackage laid. The business streets of the town are laid out BO feet wide, and several small narks have been provided. From authoritative advance in formation from the county assess or's office it is learned that the town of Hillman has been assessed at 1100,000 on the valuation of the town lots. Madras is assessed at 141,000, and Laidlaw at $23,000 on town lot valuation. The city of Redmond has not been assessed yet. At this point the railroad people are drilling a twelve inch well, and struck a good supply of water a week ago at a detith of 677 feet. Water arose to a depth of thirty feet in the well, but drilling is con tinued, it is presumed that the quest is for an artesian flow of water. As to what deDth the well will be dug, and what the object of the railway people are, no one is able to get information, but there is no haulttng of proceedings about the place. The location of the depot will be about the center of the town, and near the well. Reservations for lots are being made, and the price for some of the best corner business lots are from 400 to $000. The town is owned by the Inland Em pire company, with V. B. William son president. Household Goods For Sale.
