Elklns will remain In the sanitarium
for medical treatment. Mr. Elklus

The Easter Fair and supper given
by the Ladles Aid of tho M. E. Church
at the salesroom of Hotel Prlnevllle

successful of Its kind ever held In the
city. In the neighborhood of f 125

social event as well.

county, and thinks that that route
Is the shortest and best ever pro
posed for Central Oregon.
Guy Grsvlin, the jockev, familiarly
known as the "Brain-dust kid" arrived
from Grants Pass Wednesday, and will
ride "John H." and the other horses

that he can make as much money

Ed Slavton has returned from
Portland where he took some beef
cattle for the market. Mr. Slaytou
counts this last as one of the most
successful sales he has ever made of
beef cattle, aud Is greatly pleased
with tho outlook for the business.
There Is one thing that might be
remembered In connection with Mr.
Slay ton's snccess, that Is that the
cattle that he turns out are pro
nounced by the buyers to be the
finest grade that they find anywhere
o I the Const.
Lost Tuesday County Judge Ellis
ami Commissioner Bayley took a
trip to the Wlcle Bridge on Crooked
river to Inspect the structure, going
up In Guy Lafollette's Ileo car, with

made the trip In good time. It was

county court to make un Inspection
of the road work done on Stuart
Grade nnd Portlly Hill but as there
Is considerable suow still on Maury
mountain and that belug tho route
they desired to go, they have post
poned making this Inspection until
the season Is further advanced.
County Assessor J. D. Lnfollette,
announces that he has the following
deputies at work In Crook county,
making the assessment: C. A. Whit-
sett, who will cover the
Lamonta districts; E.
toilette, In the Trout
Willow Creek districts;
pool at Paulina; Joe
Sisters, Tumalo, Bend and Lnidlaw
country; the deputy assigned for the
Madras section was unable to take
up the work and a substitute will
have to be appointed for that work

for eighteen years.
The Prlnevllle Fire Department Is
planning to take up drill work at
once, ami practice drill may be held
the last of this week.
A pole-changer formerly used in the
Dimd cilice of the Pioneer Telephone
company has been Installed in the
local "central." This device does away
with the necessity of the girl turning a
crank to ring up number, this being
accampliHlied by pushing s buttin the
requisite numlier of times.
Hose Company No. 2 had a Jolly
little smoker Wednesday night at
the Fireman's ball. As that night
was also the band's regular business
meeting the firemen Invited the mem
lers of the band to Join them. Every
man present was armed with a pipe
and furnished with tobacco, and n
luncheon of sandwiches, cake and
eofle was served. Afterward card
names were played. 1 net smokers
are to lie held on the night of every
monthly meeting hereafter, In order
to iret the uovs to attend and nave
more Interest In the meetings. No. 1
has also adopted t his plan.
E. N. Strona. representing the Ore-
eon Life Insurance Co., arrived in Prine-
ville this week and will remain here for
some time looking after bnmness in hia
line. The Portland Telegram of April 1
had good likeness of Mr, strong and
the following notice concerning him:

bonds and Is restored to liberty to

ing, Is still In Jail.
S. S. Stearns retarded home last Sat
urday from Rosebnrg, where he went to
attend the bedside of bis sister, Mrs.
Loo Pengra. On arriving in Prineville
Mr. Stearns was handed telegram
bearing the sad news that Mm. Pengra
had died while he was enroute from
Koseburg.
Last Monday Dm. Belknap & Ed
wards amputated the right leg of
Hermann Dogner, of Madras, about
six Inches above the knee. Some
five years ago this boy Injured his
knee Joint accidentally and has suf
fered with It almost continually ever
since. At one time be was In a sani
tarium at Portland and every known
treatment was used. A tubercular
condition of the Joint developed and
the local surgeons performed the
operation Monday, most successfully

Wednesday evening Mrs. H. B.
Maben, aged about 66 years, who Is
