N i , , , r.o.Aj POTATOES MAKE MOST PROFIT "Land Is Too Valuable Fcr Wheat Raising," Say Far mers About Kedmond. Roll of Honor. Continued from p;ipe 1. In passing over the northern part of the irrigated section between O'Neil and Cline Falls one is convinced that Crook county is a country of many and varied resour ces. This year everyone in that vicinity hag been successful in pro ducing from average to good crops ond it ia easily seen that the people have not been fco'.ed as to the quality of the 6oil or the climatic conditions. It has been proved by past ex perience that wheat is not a success ful crop on many of the lands here and as one of the residents put it, 'The land is too valuable, anyhow, for wheat growing." Oats are very successful but potatoes, and o'her kinds of root crops yield wonder fully and naturally bring the big gest returns, acreage 8nd labor re quired to plant and harvest sidered. In no part of Crook county can better potatoes be seen, and this year the surplus is being hauled to chaniko and thence shipped to market at a very good price. Po tatoes as they are grown in the Redmond country produce at least twice as much profit to the farmer than is possible for wheat or other grain under the most favorable conditions. In no part of interior Oregon are there more beautiful home3 or better kept ones than in this vicin ity and the peoplo are buEy and contented. con- late and few absent. It is hoped that in another month or two, when Prof. Ashby and teachers make a another report public, the per centage of pupils neither tardy nor absent will have been materially increased. The honor roll to date is as follows: SECO.ND GKaDI. Alice Bianchanl Manda Harris Ftank Houston Vernon Lister Mabel Myers Willie Reams Marian Seabury Tillie Zell Glenn Karnes Thelnia Miller Lynn Cram Dale Eikins Dessel Johnson Ci radon McKinney Elizabeth Paneake Otto Kadloft Bertha Welch Ruth A damson Mabel Bisby Sylva Cieek Io t ram Nora lion Treaty Houston Alma I.ippman Oren Xoble Helen Spring Oregon Eastern Survey. C. R. Rankin and his crew of en gineers on the Oregon Eastern line, who have been at work on this survey for the past three years, have practically finished their work and 15 of their number came in yesterday, says the Eugene Regis ter. Mr. Rankin stayed all night at the office at Goshen checkink up matters and getting ready to move south on Sunday. The entire crew will be held together and will not be scattered as was the case last year, anditis possible this is for the purpose of being in readiness for construction work. Of course there is little that these surveyors can say in fact, they are not allowed to give out any word, but we have heard enough to warrant us in saying that the routes found are thorougly practi cable and are much better than hoped for. It is practically certain that as soon as the reports are filed at headquarters, news will be Hath ed that work will be started at once. It is a well known fact that the Great Northern cr Jim Hill, has 2 crews of engineers in the Deschutes now, working south into southern and eastern Oregon, tapping the territory that the Oregon Eastern is aimed to control, and if active work is not started on the road by Ilarriman, the Hill interests will undoubtedly capture it. We only await the news now, and when it does come, Eugene will need no further boosting.
