It has come to the notice of the
reporter that the church pulpit is
missing, and has been for some
time. If any one known what has
become it it would be an act of
kindness to tell those who are
most interested in it. If an acci
dent has befallen it the officials
would be glad to know and then
they can get another one. If per
chance it has been the victim of a
joke, the writer would suggest in
all kindness that carrying a joke
more than half a mile or three
months is carrying it too far. We
should be very glad to see the mat
ter cleared up or the pulpit re
turned without clearing it up.
We did not mention th.it we

George Hobbs came near having
a serious runaway a few days ago.
He hitched his buggy team at or
near the rear of the hout-e and
went inside for a moment; when
his horses took fright, breaking
one of the bridles and dashing
away through the sagebrush and
junipers, finally dashing into a
tree knocking one of the horses
senseless for a while and injuring
the other quite badly. The im
pact with the tree broke the
doubletree and one reach of the
buggy, and practically destroyed
the set of harness which was new.

Rev. Father Hickey's Accident
Rev. Father Hickey who passed
through Prineville the fore part of
this week for his friends, Messrs.
Morrow & Keenan's, is a very sick
man and in a dangerous condition,
as the result of a terrible accident
he met with in the town of Red
mond, a week or ten days ago.
The reverend gentleman had
been making a thorough visitation
of the Crook county portion of his
parish, taking in Post, Paulina,
Bend and Redmond, where the
serious accident which nearly cost
him his life occurred. In the duek
of the evening to the great horror
of Mr. Redmond and family and
friends, Father Hickey fell head
foremost through an ojren trap
door into the cellar of Mr. Red
mond's house, where he was stop
ping, receiving severe and painful
bruses, especially in the right arm,
shoulder and breast, mashing the
second finger of his left hand. It
was a terrible shock to the rever
end gentleman, and those who
know of the locality of the acci
dent say that it was a miricle that

making his way home to Wasco,
Sherman county, by slow and easy

his professional duties with his

made a hard drive to reach Father
Hickey at Redmond where he re

Hickey will eagerly watch for his

"The Old World and its Ways'
Col. William Jennings Bryan's
new book of travel, entitled "The
Old World and Its Ways," re
counts his recent tour around the
world and his journeys through
Europe. It is profusely and ele
gantly illustrated with 251 artistic
engravings representing men and
things seen in the various countries
of the earth during that noted
journey. The engravings are
made from photographs taken for
him or his party specially for this
publication. It is regarded by him
as the monumental literary work
of his life, and is published under
his special supervision.
It is sold only through agents,
and following its announcement it
has, we are advised, met with a de
mand that has exhausted in a few
months four large editions aggre
gating over 41,000 copies. By
special contract with hi publishers
he made the retail price low down
with the view of putting it within
the easy reach of every reader and
book buyer.
The book give hi experiences
what he saw and did whom he
met and hi impression and con
elusions. He made a profound
study of the nations and of men
and things as he taw them around
the world. He gives govern
mental, educational, religious and
other conditions, from the stand
point of a student end one pro
foundly interested in all the peo
ples of the earth.
The book is no sense political,
but is a brilliant record of travel
and observation, from the stand
point of a well informed American
citizen, concerning the countries
and the people of the earth as
seen today. While the pen de
scribed the camera pictured the
splendid detail of this noted
journey.
While Col. Bryan traveled as a
private citizen he went with the
prestige of having made two
memorable contests for the Presi
dency of the United States, and he
was everywhere recognised and
entertained as a great represents
live American, having a leading
part in the direction of American
affairs. He was given opportunity
for observations never before ac
corded to any one traveling in pri
vate capacity.
If one wants to see the world,
and the people who are at the head
of affairs in all countries, as well
as the masses, he has in this book
an opportunity of seeing them
through the eyes of Col. William
Jennings Bryan. It is sold by
subscription, and the ' Thompson
Publishing Company of St. Louis,
Mo., are the fortunate publishers
