If any one known what has become it it would be an act of kindness to tell those who are most interested in it. If an acci dent has befallen it the officials would be glad to know and then they can get another one. If per chance it has been the victim of a joke, the writer would suggest in all kindness that carrying a joke more than half a mile or three months is carrying it too far. We should be very glad to see the mat ter cleared up or the pulpit re turned without clearing it up. We did not mention th.it we have a barber in town again, also a doctor. The barber seems to have located while the medical man is looking around to see what the outlook is. In the meantime he is ready to attend to profession al calls. The many friends that Mrs. Trisler made while she was here will be pained to hear of her death which occurred at Ottumwa, Iowa, on the 14. She was taken sick up on reaching home, was recovering and had a backset. A few days before her death she suffered a paralytic stroke and if she had re covered would always have been a helpless invalid. A Mrs. Lilly and her mother, Mrs. Carmelia, were visiting in Red mond and vicinity the first part of last week. Mr. Robert Davis of Sisters, a cousin of the late Frank Glass, was over attending to arrangements for the funeral. Rev. Father Hickey was in this neighborhood last week and among other things performed the rite of baptism on Jacob Carleton I m roe lee. The Ladies' Aid Society at their meeting Thursday got flowers for decorating the Frank Glass casket. Quite a number of children have been sick or nearly so lately. George Hobta has about closed the bargain for clearing off a large oiillsite above Bend. We think from the activity of the timber men there certainly must be some thing really tangible in rumors of a coming tailroad. The well is down about five hundred feet and still going. Most all spring grain has Mown out and some of the fall sowing. Some have sown the third time. George Hobbs came near having a serious runaway a few days ago. He hitched his buggy team at or near the rear of the hout-e and went inside for a moment; when his horses took fright, breaking one of the bridles and dashing away through the sagebrush and junipers, finally dashing into a tree knocking one of the horses senseless for a while and injuring the other quite badly. William Jennings Bryan's new book of travel, entitled "The Old World and Its Ways," re counts his recent tour around the world and his journeys through Europe. It is profusely and ele gantly illustrated with 251 artistic engravings representing men and things seen in the various countries of the earth during that noted journey. The engravings are made from photographs taken for him or his party specially for this publication. It is regarded by him as the monumental literary work of his life, and is published under his special supervision. It is sold only through agents, and following its announcement it has, we are advised, met with a de mand that has exhausted in a few months four large editions aggre gating over 41,000 copies. By special contract with hi publishers he made the retail price low down with the view of putting it within the easy reach of every reader and book buyer. The book give hi experiences what he saw and did whom he met and hi impression and con elusions. He made a profound study of the nations and of men and things as he taw them around the world. He gives govern mental, educational, religious and other conditions, from the stand point of a student end one pro foundly interested in all the peo ples of the earth. The book is no sense political, but is a brilliant record of travel and observation, from the stand point of a well informed American citizen, concerning the countries and the people of the earth as seen today. While the pen de scribed the camera pictured the splendid detail of this noted journey. While Col. Bryan traveled as a private citizen he went with the prestige of having made two memorable contests for the Presi dency of the United States, and he was everywhere recognised and entertained as a great represents live American, having a leading part in the direction of American affairs. He was given opportunity for observations never before ac corded to any one traveling in pri vate capacity. If one wants to see the world, and the people who are at the head of affairs in all countries, as well as the masses, he has in this book an opportunity of seeing them through the eyes of Col. William Jennings Bryan. It is sold by subscription, and the ' Thompson Publishing Company of St. Louis, Mo., are the fortunate publishers They offer an especially inviting opportunity to solicitors in another column of this issue. Dr Clarence True Wilson . Woman Suffrage on The qnestlon Is not whether the women have a right to vote, but It 1 whether we have a rltcht to compel them nil to vote nt the dictation of a very small minority of their own nuniler. It Is certain the vast ma jority of our women do not wish the ballot. The law for the protection of women lire Improving stendily wlth the years it ml every Interest of hers I us well sn fc-j;u)i riled an that of any man. If you vvlxh to protect the rights tf women, ask .yourself today, din- my wife want to vote, does my sister, doe mv mother claim it to Ikj her privilege? If they do not, whnt rlj;ht have 1 to compel them to do It by my ballot? But it Ih suld we need the ballot of woman to aid us In government. Hut is It expedient? Will society Ik' Improved by the Krautlng of the bal lot to women? Will the better ele ment of women come to the front an political workers and fill our olllce. or will the worse? Which Is the bet ter element of women? The quiet anil unassuming queens of our homes, our mothers, sisters, wives anil sweethearts, or will politics tie controlled by the clubwomen? This is not an untried exia-rlineiit. Four states have given the ballot to women unconditionally, and after 30 years of women's voting, polities has not arrived at the moral stand ard of our own state, In Wyoming, Colorado, Idaho or Utah. But you say, "There are not as many women as men In Wyoming." Yes, but In Utah women are so plentiful that seven or eight of them club together and keep one husband between them, and with this numerous company they have not closed the saloons, or closed the brothels, or prevented gambling dens, or purified politics. Indeed there are notfourstateslnour Union where politics Is so corrupt as In the four states where women vote. It Is a sad picture where a man, for the sake of office, sells his Integrity, but it Is a sadder, and a common sight, In the states where women vote, to see women sell their virtue for offices. lean give specific Incidents with names, pluce and dates, where women, desiring to be assistant county clerks, etc,, are sent from the candidates' ofllce to the political boss to there offer her all at the shrine of a man, who, but for poll tics, would not be allowed to enter her home.
