THE OREGON TRUNK RAILROAD According to the Portland Ore gonian the Oregon Trunk Railroad engineers have completed their final survey and located the pro Hxed line for a distance of forty five miles from the mouth of the Deschutes river. Preliminary sur veys have been made for con siderable distance farther into Central Oregon, and the projectors of the line announce their inten tion of beginning construction work as soon as there is an easing of the present strain in the money market. The Oregon Trunk is the latest organiiation to take up the Cen tral Oregon transportation problem. and, t all appearances, has located the most feasible route for enter ing that rich field. The Columbia Southern, which pointed the way to development of the great re sources of the central part of the state, has always been regarded as possessing physical disabilities too great to admit of its becoming a "through" line to the southern part of the state. It is of inestimable value as a feeder from that portion of Sherman and Wasco counties which it traverses, but the very heavy grades and sharp curves preclude the possibility of its ever becoming a through line for heavy traffic. The Oregon Trunk is reported to have found a maximum grade of but 1 per cent, with the average for the first forty-five miles only three-tenths of one per cent. The management of the Oregon Trunk in selecting the Deschutes route has not only secured an easy grade for the big traffic which in time will ceme out of Centra4 Ore Oregon, but, owing to the remark ably small rise and fall of the waters of the Deschutes river, the cost of maintenance trill be reduced to a minimum. The proposed route is undoubtedly the easiest and most natural for reaching Cen tral Oregon, and with east and west feeders and connections will admit of great exploitation of the wonderful riches of that region. The Oregon Trunk, through the location of its Columbia river ter minus, will be in an exceptionally independent position in the way of an outlet. It can connect directly with the 0. R. & N. at the mouth of the Deschutes river or extend its line to open river connection at The Dalles, while connection with the North-Bank road would be an easy problem by means of a short bridge across some of the narrow places in the Columbia river. Redmond, Ore., Oct. 12. Welt, we are back. That is the most important piece of news to us individually. We trot in Sunday noon from Shaniko with Mr. and Mrs. Trisler and Mrs. Park, senior. In Shaniko we mot Mr. Lilly who was just getting back from the meeting ot the synod at Portland. W. R. Lawson wa also in Shaniko on a hurried trip. We saw Mrs. Simons and lVrnice who are look ing as well and hearty as ever. P. K. pussed us twice on the road in the night We met Mr. Muma on the road Saturday morning with wheat going in. Also passed the noted road engine Thursdiy noon at the head of Cow canyon and met it Friday forenoon as we were coming out. We presume from all reports that it has been met on the road for the last time as it seems to be no success. Mr. Gibson is moving on the Iverson place for the winter. M. L. Ogden has built on his homestead just across the road from the Iverson place. It seems good to have another house on the road to town. It is reported that J. T. Cud more is about leaving us. We did not learn where his destination will be. Everybody seems to be digging potatoes at present. We are looking forward to a pleasant t'.Dae at the Prineville fair and hope to meet many others there.
