TRIPLE MALHEUR COUNTY TRAGEDY A Jordan Valley upecial to the Oregonian says that Walter Scott, his wife and Hart Duncan are dead as the result of a terrible affray at the Scott ranch, 35 miles below this place, last week. Scott killed his wife and Duncan, and then riding to tha ranch of William Moore, three miles below Jordan Valley, shot himself to death. The man who did the shooting was a rancher and stockman, his home being on Crooked Creek. He had been working for William Moore and yesterday went home. What occured there is known only Financial considerations do not attract Mr. Hatfield, he says, his object at present being to secure government recognition of his pro cess. He believes that immense benefit would result to semi-arid districts all over the United States from the use of his methods by the government. When asked whether he believed that bis method would supplant irrigation projects, Mr. Hatfield said it defended larsely on the conditions. He asserted that rain cannot be produced where there it no moisture in the atmosphere, and says the best results are ob tained where there is a certain amount of rain, which is insultici ent for agricultural purposes. In such places he can increase the pre . . . . t . . i . mutation, lie says, enougn 10 make from his own story. Portland Journal: That one of the finest yields of grain ever pro duced in the history of Sherman county will be -harvested this year is due to the operation of Charles M. Hatfield,' the rainmaker, in the opinion of the farmers of Sherman county, who have contracted for Hatfield's return next year. Hat field worked in Sherman county from May 28 to July 25 of this year, and the committee says he produces a rainfall far surpassing the normal. ( Mr. Hatfield was at the Imperial hotel on his way to his home at Los Angeles. He says rain is not produced by the old methods of bombarding the sky, but by a sys tem of chemical combinations and electrical influences which caupe moisture that is in the atmosphere to be precipitated. The normal rainfall in Sherman county during the period of the rainmaking operations is a little more than half an inch. Hatfield claims to have produced 2.2 inches an increase of 250 per cent over the normal. "I gave five demonstrations in Sherman county and all of them were followed by rainfall," said Mr. Hatfield. "In all of my experi ments, extending over five years, I have made 48 demonstrations, and never failed to bring rain. "My contract with the Sherman county people begins next year on May 1, and extends to July 10, a longer period than this year's tests covered. If I do not increase the rainfall I get nothing. If I in crease it one inch I get $1000, and if I increase it an inch and a half or more, making the total rainfall 2i inches or more while I am there, I net $1500. This year I received from W. M. Barrett, who owns a wheat farm in Gilliam county, 30 miles from where I made the tests, a draft for $50 for the benefit I had caused to his crops. "This winter, beginning Novem ber 15, I will be at Crow's Landing, California, between Stockton and Fresno for the third year. Their normal rainfall for the past 40 vears had been 5 inches for the period of my tests. During the first year I produced 12 inches of rainfall, and last year it was 15 Timber Land, Act of June J, 1978. Notice for Piblkatie. United Suites Land Office. The Dalles. Oregon. July 13, 1J07.
