The surface of the lake is 6,2:)8 feet tiipivi sea level, it is nearly six mil us iu diameter and incompletely surrounded by nearly perpendicu lar walls from 1,000 to 2,000 feet high. It contains a circular isl and or cinder cone, 813 feet high, iu the top of which is uu extinct crater. The water is clear as crys tal, 2,000 feet deep and of the rich est possible blue. Adjoining the like and guarding it approaches the mountains are rugged, of great altitude and of no value for agri culture or mining. In spite of the laws to the contrary, wild game in tho Pacific Northwest is rapidly disappearing, and unless steps are taken in tho neur future to provide a refuge for it, many varieties will become extinct. Therefore, your petitioners ask your favorable consideration of II. 11. 4a3., Will Una oil fur Fuel. The Southern Pacific will we oil for fuel on its locomotives running as far north ns Ashland. Oil tanks are to be erected at Ashland and Dunsmuir, and at Edgewood and Ilornbrook. U'ork on theso has already been kgun. It is given out that the oil tank which the company will construct in Ashland is to be one of mam-1 moth proportions. It will be 33 feet high from the ground, with a diameter of 115 feet, and will have a capacity of holding 65,000 bar rels of oil. There ai e 42 gallons in a barrel, so that a little multipli cation shows that the new tank when full will contain 2,310,000 gallons. The donul work of Dr.O. A. The idea that an education is something which enables a man to mako a living without work U the len advantage. 'fhc right sort of an education is not a mero accomplishment for genteel idleness, but a practical training which enables one to discover the iK'st way to do overything he un dertakes. Those who have that kind of an education saves time and labor in everything they do, because they always take a prac tical view of things, and do every thing in the easiest and most common-sense way. Sygley. The next quarter of a century is going to witness one of the most tremendous and desperate struggles to save the boy from the whiskey, bottle, the gambling mania, the oc topus of social impurity, and the clutch of gold-greediness. The meetings in Carnegie hall, the blows of the' hatchet in Kansas, the anti-cigarette league are but st raws. The boy's mother is in the fight al ready. But it is time the boy's father was aroused. Shout it above the jingle of the telephone; above the clatter of the car wheels; above the chatter of the clubs, and so loud us to break the spell of the newspaper and novel: "The boy needs his father!" He must get from him a virulent, aggressive type of piety. He must see in him his ideal of courageous citizenship and staunch loyalty to honor, A hundred devoted mothers couldn't do this for the boy, though they gave their lives,' Does tho boy's father hear? Is the boy's fattier ready to meet the emergency? C, E. World.
