What is an education worth? Perhaps you will say these are futile question? because tbey deal with values that cannot be computed. But a certain business estimate can be made in a way that will appeal forcibly to many a hard-headed, matter-of-fact man on whom subtler argu ments would be wasted. In a re cent address,' Superintendent Schacffer, of Pennsylvania, pre sents the following computation which would surely be appreciated rOWLKFlLMEX Of lheEASl " AnlnterHBtinsrExplanationof their Unusual Strength. Objects on one side of the lake appear to a man at a certain angle on the ' other to be rushing rapidly up the hillsides into the clouds. He said: "If an uneducated man earns ifi.oO a day for three hun- Idred davs in a vear, he does very well; and if he keeps it up for forty years, he will earn H.oOxb'OOxlO, or 118,000. An educated man is not generally paid by the day, but by the month or by the year. If you will strike an average of the earnings of educated men, begin ning the presideut of the United States, who earns $50,000 a year, the presidents of the insu:aricej compiles, and run down the scale until you come to the lower walks in point of curnings among edu cated men, you will admit that $1000 a year is a W average for the earnings of educated labor For forty years you have f 10,000 as the earnings of an educated man. Subtract $18,000 from $10,- 0C0 and the difference, or (U'2,000, must represent the value of a boy's time spent at school in getting an education." You will all admit that the man who works with his hands at unskilled labor puts forth as much muscular effort as the man who earns his livelihood by his wits and education. Now if $22,000 represents the value of time that a boy spends at school in getting an education, what is the value of a day spent at school? The average school life of every boy and girl in Massachusetts is seven years of 200 days each; let us say that it takes four years more to get a gooil education. Reckon ing eleven years of 200 days each, you- will find that the 2,200 days at school are equal to $22,000 and a simple division on the blackboard will bring it home to the compre hension of every boy that every day at school, properly spent, must be worth $10. One director asks whether it is a violation of the compulsory law if a farmer keeps at home his eleven-year-old boy to plow, because it costs $1 .00 a dav to uet otne man t0 do t)ie work. " wli;j,, he h ,)Ut. ting $1.00 into his own pocket he is robbing that boy of $10 in the shape of future earning capacity. Is that not high-handed robbery bv a father d his own child?
