into Rome prominence now in
Eastern Oregon will be the means
lor the reclamation of a large
quantity of our arid lands, says
the Pendleton "tribune. In Uma
tilla county the law may be ap
plied soon in one or two localities
and also in Baker county. Oppor
tunities are offered and the delay :
in taking advantage of the act is
claimed to be duo largely to lack
of knowledge of its provisions.

company has located 60,000 acre
southeast of Harney City. The
company expects to take a large
ditch out of the Silvies river above
Burns. A company organized by
Portland capitalists has located a

he is chairman, has decided to go

acreage of desert land. They have
located over 100,000 acres. Be
sides, a large number of settlers
and stockmen have located claims.
The interest that has been created
and the publicity given may result
in other efforts to secure good pub
lic land.
The Carey act was approved Au
gust 18, 1804, and remains a law
until August 18, 1904, its time lim
it having been placed at the end of
10 years. The act provides for the
reclamation of arid lunds in Wash
ington, Oregon, California, Idaho,
Montana, Wyoming, Colorado,
North Dakota and Utah, granting
to each state all lands not to ex
ceed 1,000,000 acres that it may
reclaim. The state may appropri
ate funds for this purpose if it
chooses, and realize the cost of sur
veys, ditch building, boring, build
ing reservoirs.from the sale of lands.
This might not be possible in all
cases. In Oregon tho legislature
passed an ict transferring the
right granted to the state by con
gress to private parties. Any per
son or company may reclaim arid
lands according to the provisions
of the national act. '

The Mongolian pheasant (Phasi-
anus torquutus) which has become
so thoroughly at home in this
state since iu introduction by the
late Judge 0. N. Denny, that its
name in this country fs insepar
ably linked with that of Oregon, is
filling an advertising mission that
the general public probably knows
little about, says the Telegram.
The demand for this far-famed
game bird is growing so much so
that breeders are scarcely able to
keep up the supply. Orders for
Mongolian pheasants come from
almost every state and territory in
the Union. All these orders must
come to Oregon, the new Western
home of the bird and the only
state in which it is raised to any
extent for breeding purposes.

ments during the year just closed
of Game and Forestry Warden
Quimby tells a remarkable story.
Birds were shipped to 22 states
and territories during the year
and the number reached 548. Of
this number 445 were Mongolian
pheasants; 92 quail, and one a sil
ver pheasant. These birds brought
the breeders about $1500, but the
financial showing is not to be com
pared with the advertising the
birds have done for Oregon.

A very pleasant marriage cere
mony was performed at the parlors
of the St. Charles hotel on New
Year's night, January 1st, 1902.
The contracting parties were Mr.
John II. Davidson, the popular R.
R. agent, merchant and postmas
ter, of Rowland, on the' Woodburn
and Natron road, and Mies Lora V.
Powell, the accomplished daughter
of Mr. A. T. Powell, one of Linn
county's solid and well known cit

vestigation of the specific Nov. 15,
1900. They interviewed scores of
