Davioe to Scare Wolves.
Examiners in the patent office
have learned by experience that it
is a mistake to jump at conclusions
rcgaiding the usefulness of in
venUons, says the Presbyterian
Banner. A contrivance at which
they were inclined to poke a good
deal of fun, designed to frighten
wolves on western prairies, was
less than three months ago, and
already it has come into consider
able use in the Bheep growing
districts in that part of the
country.
The device is an automatic gun,
which goes off at regular intervals,
scaring the wolves away from the
flocks. It consists of a sort of box
which contains a clockwork attach
ment, with a small steel barrel pro
jecting from one end. A magazine,
also with the box, is loaded with
blank cartridges, which are fired
by the clockwork once in 10
minutes or so. By the help of a
simple mechanical attachment the
intervals between the discharges
are made as long or as short as
may be desired.
' A New Explosive
The New York Press says;
Maximite, the new explosive in
vented by Hudson Maxim, had
been adopted by this country, after
a series of successful . tests at the

been sold to the government by
the inventor, and the explosive, it!
is thought, may revolutionize war
fare. It is said to be more deadly
in its character than lyddite, yet
to safely can it be handled that
the danger attending its use is less,
than that incurred in transporting
ordinary black powder. The tests
indicate that the explosive will
pierce a 12-inch harveyized nickel
steel armorplato and having passed
through it will explode on the
other side with sufficient power to
destroy everything with which it
comes in contact. Never before

thickness been pierced.
The tests have been made by the
Ordinance Board, and have been
conducted with great secrecy. The
opinion is expressed by experts
that maximite may revolutionize
the building of battleships and
fortification. ' The insentiveness of
this explosive is so great that a red
hut iron may be thrust into a mass
el it without causing an explosion.
The explosion of the compound
after passing through the plate is
accomplished by means of a fuse.
Shell tilled with lyddite, the high
explosive adopted by the British
government, tilled in the same way
as was maximite, into the same
shells and fired at a plate an inch
and a half in thickness, all ex
ploded on impact where the maxi
mite passed through the steel
plates a foot in thickness. These
tests of maximite are regarded as

Mr. Maxim conducted the-e ex
per.ments in person, there being
no one present except the ordin

In an interview Mr. Maxim

Carnival of Ballots
Appreciating the great work of our common school educators
and desiring to demonstrate that appreciation, we have de
cided to offer in connection with this paper a fitting testimonial
of worth to the most popular teacher in this county.
Balloting may begin at any tune after the publication 01 una

tember 30, after which time no ballots will bo accepted.
Rules,
The rules governing the contest will be as follows: AW paid-in-advance
subscribers to tho Journal will be entitled to re
ceive at the time of paying their subscription a printed coupon
or ballot worth 150 votes, which will have blank wherein to
write the name of the teacher voted for. Every issue of tho
Journal during the lifeof the contest will contain a coupon gootl
for three votes, No free samples of the Journal will bo dis
tributed during the life of this contest and no clubbing offer will
be accepted where ballots are given, out.
All persons voted for MUST bo Crook county teachers and
so accepted by the county school superintendent, and must now
be engaged in teaching in this county, or have taught in thin
county during tue past eighteen months, and must not have
lost their residence in the county, i. e. they must not have re
moved irom the county to remain permanently.
The right to modify these rules at any time is reserved.
The Prizes.
Two prizes will be given; one for the most popular teacher'
and the other as a consolation prize will be given to the one re
ceiving the second largest number of badots.
The first prize will consist of a fine gold watch, any standard
make, with 15 jeweled movement and warranted for LI) year,":
the same guaranteed by a local dealer. The consolation prize
will be a 4x5 camera of standard make, Iloth of those prizes
will be bought in Prineville and be strictly lirst class articles,
They will soon be on exhibition so that every one can see just
what they are.
Distribution of these articles will take place on October 1,
or as soon thereafter as the votes can be counted, Three prom
inent gentlemen of Crook county will be asked to help count
the ballots,
