Among the last lingering bandits of
Mexico Lulgi Cortinas still holds place,
his abode, If it may be so called, being
the mountains of Western Chihuahua,
whereoffsboots off the Sierra Madres cut
away from the maiu range by the Gulf
of California afford him a hiding place.
The rurales have not yet found him,
nor is it likely they will, for Cortinas
has just retired from 'business' with
the proceeds of his new venture, esti
mated at f-10,000. It is an Ideal bandit
story.
Senor Poyerlma, grown rich by his
mines, realised, when no longer young,
that , bis children's education was de
fective. His friend. La France, sug

his niece, and make her the tntor of his
children. Lorena lived in Texas. She
was sent for and came quickly. She
became more than a tutor to the chil
dren. The son saw In her much to ad
mire. They became lovers. Frequently
they rode out together into the moun
tains.
It was on one of these joyous, free rides
that the shadow of Cortina fell upon
them. It happened that Miss Jarrett
and young Poyerima were riding along

leir horses were ridden by their cap

steep, narrow trail in the hills.
At last tbey reached a spot that
seemed to snit the views of their cap
tors for a stopping place. The camp
ing was brief and simple. They were
ordered to sit down on the ground.
Tbey complied.
The captors then went to playing
cards, not for amusement, bot to divide
tbe spoils. The winner was to have the
girl la mochacha and the loser must
content himself with the boy. It be
came evident before they bad played

But Cortina continued:

He knows my word is perfectly good,
and you need have no fear If you will
follow my directions. Come with me!"
lie took the young man aside and
then told him his plans. They were
simple and brief.
In short, Cortina remarked that he
was anxious to abandon bis career as a
brigand, but must have money enough
to live as a gentleman should. He then
told young Poyerima to go to his father
and tell blm that be could ransom the
girl on paying her weight in gold
which," continued Cortina, "is cheap,
as she Is not very heavy."
There was an agreement as to a place
and time for meeting, and young Poy
erima rode away with his own horse,
leaving Miss Jarrett to wonder what
fate had In store for her.
Young Poyerima lost no time In hur
rying borne. He speedily acquainted
bis rather with the facts. Ordering the
pack animals to tbe front of the haci

of gold, partly In bnrs and partly In
coin, and, the son leading the way, the
party set out to tbe hills to keep Cor

An electric railroad between Rome
and Naples is proposed, tbe line being
133 miles long. Tbe idea Is to furnish
fast trains, with frequent service.
The late Professor Marsh, of Yale, be
queathed his house and grounds for a
botanical garden. They are to be made
the home of the newly created school
of forestry.
Prof. C- H. Elgenmann has discov
ered a new type of cave salamander, an
active creature about four Inches long,
witb protruding eyes and a tail longer
than its body, speckled brown aud yel
low, and tbe peculiar formation of Its
feet enables It to climb vertical walls
of glass and even move like a fly across
tbe celling.
Attention Is called by tbe London
Lancet to tbe fact tbat canned toma
toes are now being extensively colored,
in order to make tbem look attractive
and as if made from ripe fruit. Among
the colors so "employed are coal-tar col
ors and cochineal. Tbe subject of arti
ficial coloring and preservation of food
Is now receiving great attention in
England.
In tbe new process of welding invent
ed by Dr. Uoldscbmldt, of Essen, a com
pound called "thermit," made of alu
minum and certain metallic oxides, is
employed to obtain an extraordinary
degree of beat. With the aid of a melting-pot,
' rails and pipes can be Imme
diately welded at any place. The pot
being filled wltb an Inflammable mix
ture and Ignited, a few spoonfuls of
thermit are added, and tbe temperature
quickly rises as high as 3,000 degrees
Centigrade. An aluminum oxide Is then
poured on the part of the rail, or pipe.
to be welded, and tbe work Is done, "so
quickly that tbe pot Is cold and can be
taken into tbe band after being emp
tied."
According to tbe statement of a for
mer resident In the Klondyke, tbe In-
habitants of tbat region suffer much
from snow blindness. Dark glasses
seem to be of no value In tbe way of
prophylaxis. Tbat wblcb afforded tbe
most protection was wooden goggles,
tbe patterns for which were taken from
those worn by tbe Indians. These were
whittled out of a piece of wood, fitting
closely around tbe eyes, and witb no
glasses at all; but in the place, of glasses
were very small openings to see
through, tbe mside being colored black.
A projection like tbe visor of a cap ex
tended over tbem, which was also col
ored black on the under side to shade
the eyes.
Tbe great earthquake that shook In
dia on June 12. 1897. was remarkable
for tbe curiously distorting effects It
produced upon standing objects. Simi
lar effects have been noticed from other
earthquakes, but seldom to so striking
an extent. In a report of tbe Geologi
cal Survey of India there is an Illustra
tion showing how this earthquake
twisted a lofty monument at Cbhatak,
Tbe monument was an obelisk of brick,
coated with plaster, more than 00 feet
tall and 12 feet square at the base.
A.xut six feet of tbe top was broken
off and thrown to the south, and nine
feet more was thrown to the east.
Then a piece 20 feet In height was sep
arated. 23 feet above tbe ground, and
twisted In a direction opposite to the
motion of the bands of a watch, but
without falling.
TAKING LIFE MASKS.
Ik la
Tcdlon Operation. Especially
for the Subject.
One often observes when reading ot
the demise of a celebrity tbat a mask
was taken by Mr. So-and-So. tbe cele
brated sculptor, soon after tbe death.
but really very few people know bow
this Is carried out. Tbey might bare
some Idea that plaster of parts is put
over the dead man's face, but there tbe
Idea ends.
A mask from life is taken almost pre
cisely in tbe same way as after death,
save that much greater care has to be
used, as the subject's life bangs on
very thin thread, or. to be more precise.
two small quills. It requires a great
deal of nerve and patience to undergo,
tbe sensation being most disagreeable.
When a mask from life is about to be
secured, tbe subject reclines on a long
table, and towels are placed around bis
neck and forehead to prevent the plast
er going where not Intended. The face
Is slightly greased, but not enough to
fill the pores of the skin. Care has to
be especially taken with the eyelashes,
as otherwise. In tbe subsequent opera
tions, these are likely to be pulled off.
which would not be exactly pleasant.
A small quill is now inserted in either
nostril to allow the subject to breathe
through, and cotton wool lightly press
ed around the base to keep the liquid
plaster from Intruding. A pair of scis
sors Is always kit bandy, so as to be
able to cut off the tops of the quills,
should by any chance the plaster splash
up and cover them. All being ready a
few cheering words are spoken to the
unhappy victim, and the plaster is mix
ed over the features. The plaster,
through being mixed with warm water,
quickly hardens, and In the course of
about five minutes tbe mold Is strong
euough to be taken off. It has to be
carefully done, as the subject is gener
ally so very eager to get a mouthful of
fresh air once agnlu. A slight tap with
the hand Is given to the two side pieces,
which relieves the joints made by tbe
thread. The top or central piece is
then lifted up aud pulled slightly down
ward, so as to withdraw the quills
from the nose as they come out with
the mold. The sides are then taken off.
Probably some of the hair may hold the
mold, but with a little coaxing, or by
the Insertion of the scissors. It cau soon j
be removed. Care must be rsed to get
the ears, but without breaking oither
the subject or the mold. The ears are j
only taken on the front sides, cotton
wool being placed at the back to pre
vent the plaster going around. When
removed the three pieces are put to
gether and plaster placed on the exter
ior to hold aud strengthen them.
