EXffSPAPER TALK.
Justice in Ireland is not blind.
She has merely been knocked down,
jumped upon, scalped, quartered
and dragged out. She is pretty
well used up. Slate man.
A one-armed man in Salem late
ly applied for a divorce on the
ground that the hand he had given
his wife in marriage was lost nnd
the contract was therefore void.
lloseburg Review.
The government is still tearing
away fences from around cattle
ranges. One by one monopolies
are going down. "We may yet live
to see the day that "a man is a
man." Palouse News.
The carnage wrought in railroad
accidents on inter-state lines this
year has not killed a single editor.
This is not the journalist's year to
travel. He is athonietlnnkingont

last year. The stringency in the
money market now alleged to exist
is believed to be purely artificial,
and is confined to.Wall street. Cou

Twenty-two years ago the steam
ship Brother Johnathan was wreck
ed off Crescent City. Only last
Monday was the wreck of the lost
steamer found eighteen miles
north of Crescent City. The rock
which wrecked her was not on the
chart. Portland News. j
One Omaha editor calls another
"a liar and a howling sneak." A
liar he may be, but a sneak will
ruin his business by howling. Howl
ing is incompatible with snsaking.
A howling liar can trade. Per
hapse the howling adjective was
misplaced. Omaha World.
Barnett G. Haskell iB yawping in
Denver. He announces his desire
to kill a policeman, and his belief
that nobody will dare hang him for
it. We are willing to sacrifice a
policeman just to prove that Mr.
is mistaken. We know of no more
beautiful neck for the halter than
his. S. F. Alia.
Maryland is said to have put a
wholesome restriction upon the
practice of wife beating, by passing
a law that men convicted of that
crime 6hould be publicly flogged.
That is all very well until some
one rises the question that such a
law is an infringement on personal
rights. Uerald-Dissemina tor.
Henry George refused to serve on
a jury. The refusal cost him $200.
The ordinary citizen would rather
do jury duty than pay such a fine.
George, however, is not an ordinary
citizen. He does not care much for
a trifling fine. He has only to pass
the anti-poverty hat a little more
freely than usual to make himself
financially even. Portland World.
Gov. Waterman, republican, is
rapidly undoing the work of his
dead predecessor, Gov. Bartlett,
democrat. Bartlett has been dead
less than three weeks, and Water
:V manhas put a republican in the
place of every democratic official in
office when he took possession of
the governor's chair. Waterman
believes that to tho victors belong
the spoils. Portland World.
J. K. Stewart, a drug clerk, of
Wichita, Kansas, has been sen
tenced to seventeen years and four
months in jail and fined $2,800 for
violating the prohibition laws of the
state. Stewart pleaded guilty to an
indictment containing 208O counts.
The punishment imposed upon him
is the heaviest ever given for the
violation of the liquor laws. Courier-Journal.
An exchange wants the trouble
some Apaches distributed about
over the country, so that the peo
ple of Arizona may be free from
their wars and rumorsof wars. The
proper way to make good Indians
of them is to plant them, five and
six in a bill, about six feet deep.
An Indian thus judiciously planted
has never yet been known to go on
the war path. Statesman.
