C o r b e tt Last Sunday night over three hundred persons crowded the Mill Plain Recreation Center in Vancouver, Washington to listen to a rare treat—an address by Mr. Edwin C. Berry, Executive Secretary of the Urban League of Portland, Oregon. Rev. Moses Guy, that dynamic, capable and efficient pastor of the United Church, Vancouver, together with his very well prepared aids, sponsored and conducted the meeting. A w ell train ed and w illing cho ru s ren d ered m any n u m b ers th a t w ere gem s and th e audience w ere lib eral in th e ir applause in re c ognition of m erit, talen t, and w ill ingness on th e ir p a rt to please th e ir liseners. Mr. B erry gave sev eral concr ete and d efin ite rules by w hich th e N egro can and w ill assum e r e sponsibility to build b e tte r re la tionship. H e en u m erated th e m as follows: 1. The N egro, as w ell as o th er races, m ust recognize clea rly th a t segregation is evil. Touching upon th is question, Mr. B erry told his audience th a t “segregation is no t re stric te d to races“ ; it applies in a to w n th a t is stric tly colored, if it is applied, ju s t as if in a tow n w h ere no N e groes lived. S egregation is w rong a t th e s ta rt—it is w rong a t th e end. 2. We m ust w ork to w ard s a b e t te r A m erica; not sim ply b e tte r life fo r Negroes. He stressed th a t fact th a t we should seek to acquire and keep th e friendship of all groups .n a tionalities and creeds, especially since w e are a m in o rity group. 3. We m ust not only w o rk to w ards a b e tte r A m erica, b u t w e m ust co-operate w ith o th e r m i no rities and w h ite friends. He stressed again th e fact th a t in m any cases w e can and w ill ob tain o u r objective if we w ill se cu re th e service and get th e a d vice of som e m em b er of o th er groups. 4. T he N egro m ust use ev ery av ailab le m eans of securing a d d itio n al education. He show ed th a t w hile we have m ade w onderful progress in th e p ast 81 y ears of freedom , y e t we can no longer m ake excuses; we m ust tak e ad v an ta g e of th e sit uation and secure th e best pos sible education, cu ltu re and th u s im prove ourselves along a c u ltu r al line. 5. We m ust im prove o ur p u b lic behavior.
