EIZER times $1.00/ ISSUE Vol. 43 • No. 9 DECEMBER 17, 2021 Commissioners choose St. Paul resident Jessica George to fi ll House District 25 vacancy BY JOEY CAPPELLETTI Of the Keizertimes Commissioners from Marion, Yamhill and Washington counties voted Friday afternoon to appoint Jessica George as the next state repre- sentative for House District 25. George will replace Bill Post, who resigned in October after seven years as the District 25 representative. “I want to thank former Representative Bill Post for his service and congratulate Jessica George on her appointment today to House District 25," Marion County Commissioner Kevin Cameron said. "Jessica’s expe- rience being in the state capitol as a staff er in the past and her relationships she has established in the building will make her an asset to her constituents." In the past, George has worked as a legislative staff member for former senators Ted Ferrioli (R-John Day) and Larry George (R-Sherwood), who is also her husband. George’s father, Rod Johnson, is also a former state senator. In addition to being a mother of three children, George now works as a project manager for the George Packing Company in Newberg, where her family grows and processes hazelnuts. Photo by JOEY CAPPELLETTI of Keizertimes Guptill, both of whom are Keizer res- idents. George was appointed to the vacancy by a six to one vote at the joint meeting on Friday, Dec. 10. She will represent the residents of Keizer, St. Paul and Newberg in the Oregon House until January 2023. After the three Republican candi- dates introduced themselves, county commissioners took turns asking the candidates questions. During her answers, George said she was pro-life, anti-mask and vaccine mandates and would walk out of state Legislature to deny a quorum if she deemed it necessary. See HOUSE, page A3 Applicants fi le for vacant Council position BY MATT RAWLINGS Of the Keizertimes After councilor Ross Day tendered his resignation from Council Position #2 on Nov. 3, a number of individu- als familiar to Keizer residents threw their names in the ring for the vacant position. Michele Roland-Schwartz: Roland-Schwartz, has been the exec- utive director for the Oregon Attorney General’s Oregon Sexual Assault Task Force since 2013. The Keizer-based task force, a private, non-profi t, fosters col- laboration to between numerous agen- cies and research disciplines to create a culture more attentive to the needs of sexual assault victims. She ran for Council Position #3 in November 2020 but was beaten out by Kyle Juran. Hersch Sangster: A former Keizer fi rst citizen, Sangster is a member of Salem Bicycle Club, as well as co-founder of the Monster Cookie, which is now the oldest group bike ride in Oregon. Additionally, he has served on a number of committees and boards that advise and make recom- mendations to the Keizer City Council. He also has been a member and chair of the Keizer Planning Commission, Keizer’s voice on the Salem-Keizer Area Transportation Study and a member of the Oregon Traffi c Safety Commission.
