FEBRUARY 12, 2021, KEIZERTIMES, PAGE A5 Keizer shelterless count stunningly low Keizer offi cials contact- ed just 19 shelterless people during its portion of the an- nual point-in-time count. Offi cers from the Keizer Police Department (KPD) Community Response Unit (CRU) and Code Offi cer Ben Crosby hit the streets along- side hundreds of other volun- teers to conduct the count on Jan. 27. “Of the seven people con- tacted this year, our offi cers know at least four of them by name and frequently have conversations with them. It is noteworthy to mention it is not by luck that Keizer does not have our own ‘tent city.’ CRU and Crosby routine- ly check for homeless camps. When a camp is located, ser- vices are offered, and then around Oregon 2020 DEATHS OUTNUMBER BIRTHS they are encouraged to move along” said a Keizer police of- fi cial in a weekly update sent out by the city on Jan. 29. “We have found most homeless people wish to be left alone, so frequent contacts seem to get voluntary compliance in moving out of Keizer.” More than 90% of those contacted turn down assistive services according to KPD. Parosa, Prevention Director of Liberty House. “We are encouraged by the amount of time, feedback, and support we have received for this cam- paign from its inception in 2018, especially by the youth in our community. This is a community campaign, but this is a youth-led campaign as well.” iRespect&Protect is a community effort facil- itated by Liberty House, the child abuse assessment cen- ter serving Marion and Polk counties. Through iRespect&Pro- tect’s website individuals, families, and organizations can educate themselves about the infl uence of screen-time on their lives, as well as fi nd free tools including digital media contracts and interac- tive conversation starters. The website also provides contact information for crisis inter- vention, crisis prevention, and ongoing support for a variety of needs teens and parents of youth may need including: online cruelty, sexting, sex- tortion, anxiety and depres- sion, and suicidal ideation. iRespect&Protect’s kick- off campaign includes bus and billboard ads and partnerships with local coffee cafes to raise awareness of the infl u- ence of device and social me- dia use on mental health and self-esteem, particularly on teens. The iRespect&Protect website and programs foster positive self-worth, promote healthy online choices, and encourage safe relationships in the digital age. iRespect&Protect will launch its website, thanks to ongoing support and input from teens, parents, medical and mental health profession- als, educators, law enforce- ment, youth-serving organi- zations and other community members. Support has con- tinued to increase since 2018 when need and vision for iRespect&Protect was cre- ated through collaborative focus groups held through Marion and Polk counties. While earlier trends sug- gested the Beaver State would hit the milestone in the near future, COVID-19 was the hit no one saw coming. The were roughly 2,000 more deaths than births in the state last year, according to Josh Lehner of the Oregon Offi ce of Eco- nomic Analysis. The birth-death rate could return to pre-pandemic pro- jections, but the speed at which that will happen re- mains uncertain. According to the Oregon Health Authority, 1,649 Or- egonians died for reasons di- rectly related to COVID-19, about 4.1% of the nearly 40,000 deaths last year. OFB is pushing for an ex- tension of the foreclosure and rent moratoriums, and more funding to address emergency housing and homelessness. “We know hunger is a func- tion of all the things a family needs to afford,” Morgan said. “Rent or food? If we can help ensure people can stay in their homes and are also able to meet their rent, they will be more food secure.” To donate to the Keizer Community Food Bank, visit bit.ly/3p4Nq1Y.
