Neighbors pitch in to give WWII vet special 93rd Evie McCarthy, 8, entered the annual KeizerFEST iris art competition because she want- ed to buy a gift for her sister. “I thought if I won, I would earn the money. If I did not win, at least I w o u l d h a v e f u n , ” Evie said. She’s now $200 richer and her winning piece will be on display throughout the annual KeizerFEST, Keizer Chamber of Commerce events and as prints for all of the event’s an- nual sponsors. Evie’s entry is titled Dos Bo- nitas and features two of the 2021 theme irises named “La Bonita.” When asked where else she would like to see her work, Evie DIAMOND Ray Wood’s neighbors posted greetings and hosted him at a celebration to mark his 93rd birthday in Keizer on Wednesday, Jan.20. Born in the little town of West Portland (since annexed into greater Portland), Wood joined the Merchant Marines when he was 14 years old, serving in both the Atlantic and Pacifi c oceans. After his service on ships he joined the Air Force, stationed in Japan shortly after the atom bomb blasts. He ended his military career in the Air National Guard. Wood has traveled around the world but calls Oregon home. He has lived in his current Keizer home for six years. John was born in Silverton and Juliana in Salem. They were married at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Salem on Feb. 11, 1961. The couple met in 1959 while cruising “The Gut,” Portland Road Northeast and parts of downtown, in Salem. John worked for and then owned 500 Motors used car lot for 34 years. He then worked fi ve years for Blue Diamond Hazelnut Com- pany and 11 years for Cher- riots Transit System. Juli- ana worked for 37 years at Moore Business Forms and 11 years for the Department of Revenue. The couple has three daughters: Jody Orcutt, Jill Storms and Joyce Cutsforth. They have two grandchil- dren Elaine Navarro and Tony Orcutt and two great granddaughters, Ellis and Anna. They have lived in Keizer since 1963. l a t e b a r w r a p p e r c o v e r ,” she said. Each year the Keizer Art Association hosts the con- test sponsored by the Keizer Chamber of Commerce. MHS artists featured at KAA While the Keizer Chamber of Commerce staff and board of directors still hope to host the annual event, nothing is set in stone. Artists of all ages are invited to submit artwork which ex- presses the holiday season in Keizer for the 2021 Holiday Card Competition. One piece of artwork will be selected by the Keizer Public Arts Commission to be reproduced as the City of Keizer’s 2021 Holiday Greet- ing Card. The artist who sub- mitted the winning selection will receive a $100 gift card to Michaels Arts & Crafts. Submit entries to Debbie Lockhart at the Keizer Civic Center offi ce located at 930 Chemawa Road NE. Submis- sions should be sent in no later than 4 p.m., Friday, March 1. Attach a signed entry form to each submission. Entry forms are available for download at www.keizer.org.offi ce. Keizer Art Association will combine its Winter Showcase and the McNary High School Art Show for its February on- line exhibit that available from Feb. 5 to Feb. 24. Winners of the juried show, including best of show, will be announced at keizerarts.com on Saturday, Feb. 5. Due to COVID-19, there will be no artists’ reception.
