PAGE A8, KEIZERTIMES, JANUARY 15, 2021 NATHAN, continued from Page A10 the Month, converting all nine of his save opportuni- ties and posting a 0.75 ERA for the month. Nathan also overtook Eddie Guarda- do for second on the Twins all-time saves list on Sept. 9, 2006, earning his 117th save against the Detroit Tigers. Nathan went 7-0 on the season with a 1.58 ERA and 95 strikeouts to go along with his 36 saves — which made him the fi rst player in Twins history to earn 35 saves in three straight sea- sons. Nathan's 61 appearanc- es were the highest in the AL while opponents batted just .158 against him. Nathan placed fi fth in Cy Young vot- ing and the Twins won the AL Central for the second time in three years. Even though the Twins had a disappointing season in 2007, Nathan still played at an extremely high level, converting 37 of his 41 save opportunities for the season. For the third year in a row, Nathan was named a fi nalist for the Reliever of the Year award after posting a 1.88 ERA and 77 strikeouts over 71.2 innings. In 2008, the Twins re- signed Nathan to a four-year, $47 million contract. After converting 27 of his fi rst 29 save opportunities, Nathan made his return to the All- Star Game. He fi nished the year with a 1.33 ERA, which was a career-best, and 39 saves. One of the best seasons of Nathan’s career came in 2009 when he led MLB with a ca- reer-high of 47 saves, which was a new franchise record. At the end of the year, Na- than was awarded the AL Re- lief Man of the Year Award. However, Nathan couldn’t duplicate his regular season success in the playoffs as he blew a save in game two of the ALDS against the Yan- kees — the Twins lost the series in three games. Nathan was sidelined for the entire 2010 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery to repair an injured elbow. Nathan struggled in his return to the team in 2011 and lost his role as the closer. However, on Aug. 10, 2011, Nathan became the Twins franchise leader in saves. The Twins elected not to renew Nathan’s contract in the offseason, which made him a free agent. He wound up signing a two-year deal with the Texas Rangers. Nathan had a great bounce-back season in 2012, fi nishing the year with an ERA of 2.80 and 37 saves. He also made his fi fth all-star appearance. Nathan pitched even better for the Rangers in 2013, going 6-2 with a 1.39 ERA and 43 saves. On April 8, 2013, Nathan recorded the 300th save of his career against the Tampa Bay Rays. He also made it to his sixth All-Star Game and recorded the save for the AL. In the offseason, Nathan signed a two-year, $20 mil- lion deal with the Detroit Ti- gers. Although his ERA bal- looned up to 4.81 in 2014, Nathan still earned 35 saves for the Tigers, He made one appearance in the postseason for Detroit and retired all three batters he faced. Nathan appeared in only one game with the Tigers in 2015. He once agains had to endure Tommy John surgery after re-injuring his throw- ing elbow. Nathan signed a minor league deal with the Cubs in 2016. He spent the fi rst 60 days of the seasons on the disabled list recovering from his Tommy John Surgery. However, Nathan was re- leased after just three games. He was signed by the team that drafted him, the Giants, and appeared in seven games for San Francisco. On Sept. 3, 2017, Nathan signed a one-day contract with Minnesota to offi cial- The Brat Minnesota Twins Photo Joe Nathan waves to the crowd after being inducted into the Minnesota Twins Hall of Fame. As 2021 gets underway, we all refl ect on the past year as the disturbed child of an otherwise normal and happy family. This delinquent child brought wrath down on us all. Even those of us who just wanted to go fi shing. Winter steelhead fi sh- ing on the coastal rivers has become more of an early spring event with a policy of releasing very few earlier returning hatchery fi sh in fa- vor of relying on wild stock that generally return from the ocean in late February and into April. This noble, yet fl awed policy has resulted in fewer fi sh, almost none in many small rivers, and con- centrating all the fi shermen in a few large rivers over a shorter period of time. Not an optimal situation. Making this situation im- possible, the coastal counties closed all public county boat ramps to prevent the spread of COVID-19, rendering most rivers unavailable, leav- ing only the smaller rivers with very few fi sh available. This did enhance the abili- ty of most fi shermen to complain and make excuses for poor catch rates, a virtue we excel at in spades. For those of us who fi sh for trout, there were oppor- tunities, but campgrounds were closed most every- where until early summer. This disadvantage for us was overcome in late May by traveling eight hours to fi sh the Owyhee River where rough camping and no facil- ities were available. In June we made our an- nual trip to Klamath Lake for big rainbows. Apparently these fi sh were social dis- tancing as few were interest- ed in our fl ies. ly retire from baseball as a member of the Twins. He is the Twins franchise leader in saves, single-season saves, highest strikeout-to-walk ra- tio and most consecutive save opportunities converted. Nathan ended his career with the eighth most saves in MLB history (377) — 376 of which were in the AL, which is second most in league his- tory. He also retired with an 89.3% save percentage, which is the highest among players with at least 200 saves. Nathan’s had four seasons with 35 saves, a sub-1.89 ERA and sub-1.00 WHIP, which is tied for the most of all time. His nine seasons of 35 saves or more and four seasons of 40 saves or more are each the third most in MLB history. Email the reporter at news@ keizertimes.com August was a bit more generous. We made two trips to fi sh the lower Deschutes River but the steelhead were scarce. A two-day trip to Crane Prairie Reservoir was fun and productive, but crowded. We had thought of new strategies to try there this year. As the pandemic con- tinued on, September greeted us with epic wild- fi res. We were able to fi nd our way through the smoke to travel to Nehalem Bay to fi sh for Chinook. We had good and and luck: all the fi sh we caught were large Coho salmon, which by law had to be released. At least we caught fi sh. The remainder of the year was sprinkled with a few canceled salmon trips. Various reasons caused these cancellations, but in truth, I think we were worn out with the whole experience of all the restrictions and hassles. But now the “Year of the Brat” is behind us and with the vaccine, we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. May we all have a better 2021! I have fi sh to catch. public notices NOTICE TO INTERESTED PERSONS NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the undersigned has been appointed personal representative of the Estate of James P.
