PAGE A6, KEIZERTIMES, JANUARY 15, 2021 CHAMBER, continued from Page A1 It’s not as simple as having a plan and pulling the trigger on it as soon as a pathway opens up. “Both events take hundreds of hours to plan and that de- pends on volunteers,” Caillier said. First Citizen may end up being a virtual affair, but there’s no real way to pull off 1,000 people in a concert tent safely while the pandemic rag- es. “The good thing is that we are operating on a budget that doesn’t require either event to happen this year and that is thanks to Danielle,” Caillier said. In terms of budget, mem- bership has fallen during the pandemic, but Caillier is hope- ful the chamber will qualify for a Payroll Protection Loan as part of the new COVID-19 relief package passed before Christmas. He also hopes that some of the non-profi t mem- bers of the Chamber will also qualify. Non-profi ts might even qualify for retroactive benefi ts from the fi rst COVID relief package. Despite the pandemic, Chamber members have kept a weekly meeting schedule. Aside from networking, ed- ucation regarding pandemic guidelines and funding relief opportunities is a new priority. Caillier, who spent 29 years as a police offi cer, is no stranger to business affairs. Af- ter retiring from public safety, he worked as a consultant to businesses, agencies and ven- dor implementing new public safety technology. He said that experience gave him understanding of some of the daily business struggles, but he sees the role of chamber director as more closely related to his work as a community leader. “There is the day-to-day aspect of the job, but one of the director’s biggest roles is as a volunteer recruiter and coordinator, those are things I am defi nitely familiar with through my work with Rota- ry and as a Keizer city coun- cilor,” Caillier said. Caillier lives in Keizer with his wife Christine. CHAOS: ‘There must be consequences ...’ (Continued from Page A1) secret police to sweep people off the streets & meet them with tear gas & rubber bullets. When our Capitol was under siege? The contrast could not be more revealing or disturbing,” Merkley wrote on Twitter. Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden, a Democrat, blamed other col- leagues in the U.S. Congress for fanning the fl ames that keep unrest over a settled presidential election raging. “There must be consequences for senators who would fo- ment a violent mob for personal gain. I call on Senators [Josh] Hawley and [Ted] Cruz to resign and accept the responsibility which they so clearly bear,” Merkley said via Twitter. He labeled Trump a “clear and present danger” to the coun- try and called for the Senate to reconvene for impeachment proceedings. An Article of Impeachment charging Trump with “incite- ment of insurrection” was introduced in the House of Rep- resentatives on Monday, Jan. 11. The short- age in inventory raised 2020 home prices 8% over 2019’s numbers. The reasons for the low housing stock are multitude and historical. Shackelford sees record-low interest rates as one driver of the current seller’s market. The entire area is still expe- riencing fallout from the hous- ing market crash of 2008, said McLeod. “The real challenge is that the construction industry still has not caught up with produc- ing inventory to match demand since the downturn of '08. That fi nancial event decimated their industry. They usually don’t get the home,” Shackelford said. For sellers, Shackelford’s ad- vice was not to overthink the process. They may not need to do the repair or remodeling tra- ditionally expected. “Buyers will do those proj- ects themselves if that’s what it takes to get the house,” he said. McLeod expected an up- ward shift in interest rates with a new presidential adminis- tration on the cusp of taking offi ce. It could cause prices to stall and lock more new home buyers out of the market with higher house payments. “Timing the market, of course, is impossible,” McLeod said. “And you won't know that you've missed the peak until you've missed it.” Email the reporter at editor@ keizertimes.com. 3975 River Rd N, Suite 3, Keizer public notices of this Notice to the Personal Representative at Campbell Phillips PC, P.O. Successfully fi nding your next home in the current real estate environment requires a dramatic paradigm shift, and will have to be fueled by a clear and driving reason to move,” said McLeod. The low stock is affecting the new realtors as well. While both McLeod and Shackel- ford had banner years in 2020, they’ve seen newer realtors struggle. “It takes a lot from a new agent to get their feet wet in this inventory. It’s a struggle to spend numerous hours with clients just to get beat out on a cash buyer, and very frustrating Keizer & Salem’s GO-TO-REALTOR for Buying & Selling KEIZER NEWS IN YOUR MAILBOX ONLY $35 A YEAR CALL 503-390-1051 NOTICE TO INTERESTED PERSONS new construction necessary to meet the national housing de- mand,” she said. Baby Boomers looking to downsize, after having bought larger homes in the 1990s, are also not fi nding housing that meets their decreased needs, according to McLeod. Those circumstances have a domino effect limiting the availability of Generation X homeowners to move up and thereby reducing the stock for Millennial buyers. Another factor limiting stock is fear on the part of sell- ers as to where they might end up if they sell their home. “Some are moving in with parents or renting to reap the benefi ts of high price increase. They get the equity in these good times while riding out the storm hoping to be able to be ready to make an offer on a new listing when they come available,” Shackelford said.
