PAGE A6, KEIZERTIMES, DECEMBER 4, 2020 COVID: Marion County is on ‘extreme risk’ list, triggers stricter measures (Continued from Page A1) only six people per table. Take- out is strongly encouraged. • Indoor recreation, fi tness, and entertainment establishments, including gyms, will remain closed, however, outdoor recreation, fi tness, and entertainment activities, including outdoor gym activities, will be allowed, with a maximum limit of 50 people outdoors. • Retail stores, grocery stores, pharmacies, and indoor and outdoor shopping centers and malls will be limited to a maximum of 50% of capacity, with curbside pick-up encouraged. • Faith institutions, funeral homes, mortuaries, and cemeteries will be limited to a maximum of 25% of capacity or 100 people indoors (whichever is smaller), or 150 people outdoors. • Offi ce workplaces will be required to utilize remote work to the maximum extent possible, with public-facing offi ces closed to the public. • Personal services businesses will be allowed to continue to operate with health and safety measures in place. • Long-term care facilities can allow limited outdoor visitation, following established health and safety protocols. Oregon counties that are successful in reducing their COVID-19 risk levels in the coming weeks and months will be able to incrementally move to lower risk levels. Last week, state authorities issued a $90,000 fi ne to Courthouse Fitness Club, which has a location in north Keizer, for refusing to abide by the recent freeze order. Vaccine trial begins at OHSU Oregon Health & Science University is seeking Port- land-area residents to partic- ipate in a research study eval- uating a potential COVID-19 vaccine. OHSU is the only Oregon institution involved in a Phase 3 clinical trial evaluating the nov- el coronavirus vaccine candi- date developed by Oxford Uni- versity and the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca. The trial seeks to enroll a total of 30,000 participants to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the investigational vaccine known as AZD1222. The experimental vaccine is designed to be giv- en in two injections that are administered about four weeks apart. Portland-area adults in- terested in enrolling in the trial should go to www. c19vaccinestudy.com or call 888-VAC-STDY (888-822- 7839) for more information. Trial participants must be 18 or older, not be pregnant, have either stable medical conditions or no medical issues, have not been previously diagnosed with COVID-19, and should live within approximately 1.5 hours of OHSU’s Marquam Hill/ South Waterfront campus in Portland, among other criteria. Participants will be monitored for two years. Interim results from the experimental vaccine’s Phase 1/2 trial in the U.K. showed it generated a robust immune re- sponse and led to mild or mod- erate adverse reactions such as headaches, fatigue and chills, according to a scientifi c paper published in The Lancet in July. This is a randomized trial where two-thirds of partici- pants will receive the exper- imental vaccine and one third will receive a placebo. It is also a double-blind study, meaning neither the participants nor the clinicians involved will know who receives the vaccine or the placebo. Phase 3 trials provide expanded information about drug candidates, including eval- uating their overall risks and benefi ts, and are often the last step before requesting FDA ap- proval for a drug’s widespread use. As part of the standard re- view process for trial safety events, AstraZeneca temporar- ily and voluntarily paused its vaccine trial Sept. 6 when a trial participant experienced unex- plained neurological symptoms. The trial resumed in the U.S. on Oct. 23 after the FDA re- viewed the study’s global safety data and determined it was safe for the trial to continue. GREEN, continued from Page A1 federal response, and we weren’t thrilled about the state response. Finally, we asked the question, ‘Well, what are we doing?’” The group decided to approach the leaders of the church with a plan to shift to solar power, but the scope of the project soon included fi ve partner churches in the United Methodist community and a total of six buildings. It was the fi rst major project the congregations undertook as part of its Open Doors initiative unifying the faith as a whole. Cox thought the cost of converting First United in Salem was doable fi nancially. But, with the inclusion of fi ve other buildings on the list, the cost quickly ballooned to roughly $400,000. The churches began applying for grants, but were told that they had a steep hill to climb in garnering approvals. “One of the grant providers even told us that the weather in the Willamette Valley, with all the clouds we have, would be working against us,” Cox said. To bolster their chances, the grant proposals included a storage battery installed at the downtown church that could help power the church in emergency situations and allow it to become a staging area for emergency management. Despite the low odds, the church leaders persisted and the solar project received three major grants, from Energy Trust, the Oregon Department of Energy and Portland General Electric. Landing the grants reduced the cost to the congregations to roughly $160,000, they raised the remaining balance in three months. “We were really proud of the way we did it,” Cox said. “We have some smaller churches that probably couldn’t have raised the money needed on their own. When we took in donations, we made sure everyone knew it would support all fi ve churches.” Clear Lake United Methodist will be the fourth church to begin producing power and only one major installation remains. Girls Scouts go virtual The Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington will be hosting virtual events throughout the winter to pro- mote wellness, creativity and silliness. These events are best suited for preschool through third grade girls and are free and open to the public; you do not need to be a Girl Scout to attend. Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington is committed to providing a safe place for girls. For details, visit www. girlscoutsosw.org/ Contractors are still working on getting the reserve battery installed at First United, but the major work is already complete. Trinity United Methodist Church, in Salem, will be the last one to go online. Because the building is designated as a historical site, none of the solar power equipment can be visible and will, instead, be placed underground. The churches are expected to save approximately $660,000 over the next 25 years as a result of moving to renewable energy. The environmental benefi ts include: reducing the amount of gasoline consumed by roughly 16,000 gallons; reduced coal burning to the tune of 152,000 pounds; and reducing the amount of carbon dioxide ejected into the atmosphere by more than 300,000 pounds. Cox said he’s looked for other churches in the state and country that have taken on such a massive project but he hasn’t found any yet. “We wanted a project big enough that we could say we made a difference in climate change, a real difference. The real payoff would be inspiring others to make a similar change.” Fortunately, Cox is already fi elding calls of that exact nature. NEWS TIPS?
