JULY 10, 2020, KEIZERTIMES, PAGE A3 The world turned upside down Hamilton, with original cast, arrives on streaming By TJ REID For the Keizertimes What is the purpose of a review? To temper or raise ex- pectations? To introduce read- ers to the themes, characters, and plot points of a piece be- forehand? To show that the re- viewer is super smart and that people should have been nicer to him in high school? Yes, all of these things, but the preem- inent reason is undoubtedly to share whether or not the pro- duction is worth your time and money. Hamilton is one of those things that is hard to review be- cause, let’s face it... you already know if you’re going to watch this or not. Nothing I can pos- sibly say will change your mind one way or another at this point. You might have already watched it, in fact; everyone knows Hamilton, and now it is on Disney+. Instead of wast- ing everyone’s time by adding to the eleven-time Tony Award winner’s mountain of rave re- views I will, therefore, focus on the Disney+ version of the eminent musical in particular: Simply put, it is a worthy offer- that comes with watching mu- sicals in person. I would be remiss, howev- er, if I did not mention that like most musicals, Hamilton is a p p rox i m a t e l y three hours long. This is somewhat remedied by the fact that you can pause the play whenever you want to go pee, but it also might make it a chore to sit through if you watch it with kids (see my nephews Pe- ter and James for an excellent example). That being said, Dis- ney also does an admirable job of cutting out an f-bomb here and there to make the expe- rience a more family friendly PG-13. Hamilton on Disney+ is, over- all, a slightly more complete ex- perience than the one presented in, say, the offi cial soundtrack. I say “slightly” here because the music and lyrics really make up the bulk of the production; as anyone who is lucky enough to have seen the play in person can tell you, the sets and chore- ography are purposefully min- imalist so they do not distract from the story. This may come as a bit of a surprise to anyone who has heard the soundtrack and imagined elaborate setpiec- es and compli- cated dances, but it works. Expe- riencing Ham- ilton like this is really the best way to go until the virus re- strictions end and we can all go on a fi eld trip to New York to- gether. When that happens, I’m buying. Well, not really. Hamilton is now available on Disney+. review Submitted Daveed Diggs, as Marquis de Lafayette, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, as Alexander Hamilton, reunite on the battlefi eld in the fi lmed stage production of Hamilton. ing that is also the best possible way to experience the show just short of buying a ticket to pre-COVID-19 Broadway. First things fi rst: Hamilton on Disney+ is a professional fi lm- ing of the stage production, not an adaptation. That being said, the camera work is surprising- ly dynamic: There are multiple angles and depths presented, giving the whole experience a slightly more cinematic feel. If one of the characters has a par- ticularly impressive reaction, for example, you can bet that you will get a close-up of that char- acter. This forced focus is useful for someone like me who of- ten gets overwhelmed with the sheer amount of sensory input maze Tax deadline looming The Oregon Department of Revenue is reminding taxpayers that July 15 is the deadline for fi ling a tax return and paying taxes due. Oregon, along with the IRS, extended the deadline to fi le and pay federal taxes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For personal income taxpay- ers: • The Oregon return fi ling due date for tax year 2019 is July 15, 2020. • The Oregon tax payment deadline for payments due with the 2019 tax year is July 15, 2020. • The tax year 2019 six- month extension to fi le until October 15, 2020, if requested, extends only to the fi ling (not payment) deadline. If you have questions about your personal income tax, con- tact questions.dor@oregon.gov. For corporate income/ex- cise taxpayers: • The Oregon return fi ling due date for tax year 2019 is July 15, 2020. • The Oregon tax payment deadline for payments for the 2019 return, normally May 15, 2020, is now July 15, 2020. • Fiscal year returns and re- lated payments due after July 15, 2020 are not extended at this time. Interest and penalties: • Because of the extension of the due dates for fi ling returns and making payments, any in- terest and penalties with respect to Oregon tax fi lings and pay- ments begin accruing on July 16, 2020. • No automatic extension is provided for the payment or deposit of any other type of Or- egon tax or for the fi ling of Or- egon information returns.
